Oprah Winfrey and BFF Gayle King enjoy a 'gratitude and praise hike' as they end 2022 on a spiritual note
MONTECITO, CALIFORNIA: Oprah Winfrey and her best friend Gayle King bid farewell to 2022 and entered the new year on a high note as they joined up with a group of friends for a 10.2 miles trekking trip to the hills and mountains with a spiritual mantra. The group of friends was seen showing “gratitude for the life they live” and the “year they had.”
The talk show host filmed the 10-mile trek in a series of four videos which she shared on her Instagram page. The clips were filled with fun moments between the two longtime friends who joked with each other and their fellow hikers. In the first clip from the video diary series, Winfrey, who was dressed in a pink sweatsuit and hat, stood in front of the camera with the entire crew, geared up to commence their trek. As the group gathered around, they expressed their spiritual mantra in mind for going up the hills with Winfrey going first.

"So here's the deal," The host of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ began. "We're doing an end-of-year hike. This isn't just hiking up a mountain, this is a gratitude hike. So, the whole intention of this hike is to show gratitude for the life you live, for the year you've had, for the blessings you've received, so it's a gratitude and praise hike. I'll be doing this in the name of Barbara Walters, who has been a great mentor and friend to me," she said. Winfrey's mantra: "In God, I move and have my being." Winfrey captioned the post, saying, “Ended 2022 with a morning “gratitude” hike that lasted half the day. Uphill for 5 miles straight. 10.2 miles round trip. We packed bread, gospel songs and mantras—follow along to see how it goes.”
Winfrey captured another video for her 21.8 million fans on the social media app after some significant time hiking as she appeared to be heavy breathing throughout the shooting of the visual update. "Here's the big deal. A year ago I had knee surgery. So November of last year, I couldn't walk period. So I am an [advertisement] for new knees," she said. The television icon also talked about her knees and recovery in the second video.
The third video found the whole group at the top as they celebrated the feat with a bread and cheese picnic. Winfrey and King with their companions sat on the grass where they laughed around and shared many fun moments. In the clip, it is clear that while Winfrey loves bread, King was not a fan of the menu set for their picnic. However, toward the end, the TV show host’s best friend caught a liking of it. Winfrey offered words of wisdom in the caption: "As you walk into this new year, take this as a reminder to put one foot in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. And whether you’re hiking an actual mountain or just tackling a problem, remember to look at how far you’ve come and not how far you have left to go. Happy 2023."
Winfrey filmed another video that showcased the group finishing the Gratitude Hike. The fourth and final clip centered mostly around King as the two friends found the time to joke about the extra time taken to complete the trek. "How did @gayleking do during our 5-hour hike? (7 hours for Gayle, actually.) Here you go—she says her toes hurt today," the philanthropist wrote in the caption of the last post.
Winfrey and King became friends 46 years ago when they met in their early 20s while working at WJZ-TV in Baltimore in 1976, as per Yahoo.
