'Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre' Review: Guy Ritchie's take on spycraft is entertaining and captivating
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: There is no doubt that Guy Ritchie is one of the most stylish filmmakers we have in the industry and most of his movies are filled with trademark shots that made him so successful since he entered the world of cinema. Whether it was ‘Snatch’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’, Ritchie always mixed storytelling with his unique way of filmmaking. The director is set to take viewers on another enthralling journey with his latest action movie titled ‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’. Ritchie’s movies are filled with exciting chase sequences and exquisite locations. This movie is no different and features a lot of scenes where you’ll be at the edge of your seat.
The movie begins with Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes) getting an assignment to retrieve a stolen device known as ‘The Handle’ after it gets stolen by a group of mobsters. The British Government has hired Nathan to neutralize the threat and set up a team for this mission so that the device doesn’t get into the hands of billionaire arms dealer Greg Simmonds. Nathan hires super-spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) to lead a team made up of different members that include the likes of Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza), JJ Davies (Bugzy Malone), and others. The team travels to Madrid in order to get the hard drive containing the sensitive data. However, their mission is interrupted when a rival of Nathan named Mike enters the situation and takes the hard drive away. Now, the team has to take a different approach to accomplish the mission and it includes superstar Danny Francesco.

We won’t spoil the movie by exploring all the plot lines in the movie, but there’s a lot happening in this one and it’s quite hectic. However, Ritchie has done a splendid job in adding so much entertainment in an environment that is restless and continues with so many different layers every 15 minutes. The opening sequence of the movie lays the perfect foundation for the movie and it is so beautifully synchronized with the thumping background music that you’ll be hooked to your screens from the very first frame.
'Operation Fortune' has all the elements of a Guy Ritchie film
The movie is 113 minutes long and yes, there are some sequences that might feel a bit stretched, but all the action sequences and witty one-liners between the characters elevate this movie to a new level. ‘Operation Fortune’ carouses in the irreverence that one expects from a Guy Ritchie film. The action sequences are bloody brilliant and it makes us wonder what will happen if Ritchie is given to direct a movie like ‘Mad Max’. I will surely pay to watch that film.
As far as acting is concerned, Jason Statham is doing what he does best and continues to be one of the best action heroes of this generation. Aubrey Plaza is mesmerizing as Sarah and her continuous banter with Statham is one of the highlights of this movie. Meanwhile, Bugzy Malone is great as well. However, two of the best performances in the movie come from Hugh Grant (Greg Simmonds) and Josh Hartnett (Danny Francesco). The bromance between the two characters is a treat to watch and viewers will definitely want to see more of them in future movies.
Grant seemed to be having a great time playing a bad-boy billionaire with an accent that’s subtle and a bit naughty. His monologue in the ending moments of the movie shows how brilliant he has been over the years and even when he is a bad guy, you tend to root for him in that scene.
Is 'Operation Fortune' worth watching?
All in all, ‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ feels like an excellent time at the cinema and entertains viewers to the core. Filled with enthralling action sequences, funny one-liners, and exceptional performances, the movie is another win for Guy Ritchie. It’s not as good as James Bond, but the movie manages to create its own space in the genre of spy movies.
