What happens to Thor’s hammer Mjølnir? New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ teaser sparks major speculation
One can't help but be fascinated by Marvel's marketing campaign for the upcoming 'Avengers: Doomsday'. Although the better part of a year separates us from the biggest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the powers-that-be at Disney and Marvel are sparing no expense to make sure that audiences all over the world are intrigued by the next phase of the tentpole's storytelling. While the first 'Avengers: Doomsday' teaser featuring Steve Rogers as a father made its rounds in theatres opening for 'Avatar: Fire & Ash' and was subsequently released online, the second teaser featuring Chris Hemsworth's Thor has finally appeared in the public domain through official channels.
The teaser begins in a sunny forest where the familiar God of Thunder is seen kneeling in prayer. This isn't the thunder-wielding Norse God we're accustomed to seeing. Instead, Thor addresses his father, Odin, and humbly submits his prayers to the All-Fathers, requesting them to grant him the strength to fight one more battle. All this while, Thor's voice-over runs in the audio track, where he says, "Father, all my life I have answered every call to honor, duty, to war. But now, fate has given me something I never sought..." The visual then takes us inside a log cabin, where Thor's daughter, Love, is seen sleeping, only to be awakened by her father.
Although the teaser does a commendable job of establishing Thor in the larger scheme of things in the upcoming movie, his familiar weapon of choice, Mjølnir's absence, was felt as he carried the Stormbreaker with him as his primary weapon. The Stormbreaker gained prominence in the previous movie, 'Avengers: Infinity War', and it was only in 'Thor: Love and Thunder' that Mjolnir was rebuilt. This trivia holds particular importance for the film's narrative as it hints at a potential showdown between Thor and Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, one which could be so catastrophic that it would end up destroying Mjølnir, leaving Thor with no recourse but to depend on his Stormbreaker. The ultimate fate of Mjølnir remains shrouded in mystery.
On the other hand, there's an opening for Steve Rogers to wield Mjølnir, as has been established by the other films in the franchise. Since Captain America returns to Earth 616, as per Koimoi, he would be well placed to wield the divine weapon, as he's the only one besides the God of Thunder who has earned the right to do so. From the looks of the teaser, it does seem like Thor might be in for the most pitched battle of his life in 'Avengers: Doomsday'.
'Avengers: Doomsday' is directed by Anthony and Matt Russo and brings together an ensemble cast that has been making headlines. Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Danny Ramirez, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, and Winston Duke will be featured in prominent roles, alongside Pedro Pascal, Ebon-Moss Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and others. 'Avengers: Doomsday' releases exclusively in theatres on December 18, 2026.
