SANTA YNEZ, CALIFORNIA: One of the biggest pop stars of the '70s, Olivia Newton-John, died at 73 on Monday, August 8, according to a statement from her husband. The singer with a golden voice had been battling breast cancer for years and then revealed in 2018 that she was treating cancer at the base of her spine as well, which was her third diagnosis. Olivia died peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California.
Olivia Newton-John's husband, John Easterling, broke the news on the highly successful singer's official Instagram account, writing, "Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time." The 73-year-old singer-songwriter, famous for starring in 'Grease' (1978) and 'Two Of A Kind' (1983) opposite John Travolta, was in a battle with cancer for over 30 years. The official statement continued, "Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. The statement further read, "Olivia is survived by her husband John Easterling; daughter Chloe Lattanzi; sister Sarah Newton-John; brother Toby Newton-John; nieces and nephews Tottie, Fiona and Brett Goldsmith; Emerson, Charlie, Zac, Jeremy, Randall, and Pierz Newton-John; Jude Newton-Stock, Layla Lee; Kira and Tasha Edelstein; and Brin and Valerie Hall."
How did Olivia Newton-John die?
Newton-John was first taken aback by the news of breast cancer back in the '90s. She continued to fight the disease for over 30 years as it resurfaced once again in 2017. That is when she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. As mentioned by her husband in the statement, Olivia did not suffer in the end and died peacefully after a long battle with breast cancer.
Merely a year ago, in a conversation with People, Olivia explained that she felt great amid stage 4 cancer. She then complimented her husband saying, "I'm very lucky to be married to a wonderful man who is a plant medicine man, and he has great knowledge. Now he's growing medicinal cannabis for me, and it just has been wonderful. It helps me in every area." Her daughter Chloe Lattanzi has been her ray of hope all these years.
