LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise are two of the biggest personalities working in the industry right now and have been gracing our screens for more than five decades. Cruise stunned the whole world with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ while Spielberg told his life story in an extraordinary film like ‘The Fabelmans’ and both movies have been nominated for several Academy Awards. On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon where Spielberg and Cruise met each other and struck up a conversation. However, the biggest highlight of the conversation was how the legendary filmmaker thanked Cruise for saving ‘Hollywood’s a**’ with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

In a video uploaded by Oscar nominee Kartiki Gonsalves, whose film ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ has been nominated for Best Documentary Short Film, Spielberg and Cruise can be seen embracing each other and talking about the film industry. During the conversation, the ‘West Side Story’ helmer thanked Cruise for “saving theatrical distribution” with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

When Spielberg thanked Cruise for saving 'Hollywood's A**'

“You saved Hollywood’s a** and you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ might have saved the entire theatrical industry,” Spielberg said during the conversation.

Social media went berserk after listening to the conversation and felt that Spielberg isn’t lying about how ‘Maverick’ gave life to movies that are not from the superhero genre. One of the fans said, “Tom Cruise will go down as one of the greats. Not for "cinema" and Oscars necessarily (we all know they're bought lol) .. but just for fun blockbuster action films. He just genuinely wants people to enjoy the movies he's in. And we do! I'll watch anything he's attached to.” Another fan wrote, “Firmly agree.” Another social media user wrote, “Not even joking, top gun maverick was kinda the best new movie, besides everything everywhere all at once, that I’ve seen for a really long time.”

“He’s not wrong. Also, need a new collaboration between the two,” wrote another user. “I agree. I don't think Spielberg just means money. I think he also means a demographic of people, esp older adults. With older adults returning to the theater, different types of films will hopefully be made again with the same $ backing that great comic book/Superhero movies get,” tweeted another user.

'Top Gun: Maverick' kept the box office rolling

Released in 2022, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ became the highest-grossing movie of last year and was the second movie to earn more than $1 billion at the global box office after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. The massive success of the sequel might have come as a surprise to many, but Cruise and the makers made sure that this movie catered to everyone. The movie grossed $160.5 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend finishing first at the box office and nearly doubling Cruise's previous career-best.

The film grossed $718.7 million in the United States and Canada, making it the fifth highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office. On the other hand, it made more than $1.48 billion globally and became the 11th highest-grossing film in the history of cinema. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was so successful throughout its theatrical run that 16% of the audience had returned to theatres to watch the movie again at least once. Meanwhile, 4% of the audience saw it more than three times.
