The driver who was responsible for the hit-and-run that killed Nicki Minaj's father in 2021 was sentenced to one year in prison on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. The accused had previously pleaded guilty to the crime and tampering with evidence in the crash on New York’s Long Island that killed the rapper's father. While he was initially facing up to 7 years in prison, the judge decided to go lenient on him. Charles Polevich, 72, was the man behind the hit-and-run that killed Robert Maraj. He was sentenced to one year in jail, was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine, and had his driver’s license suspended for six months.

Polevich's lawyer Marc Gann argued that his client might be suffering from a mental condition at the time of the crash and claimed that he might not be fully aware of the events after he fled as well, as per TMZ. In court, Polevich said that he's "been heartsick since realizing the extent of the tragedy" and that there was "no excuse" for his behavior. However, Maraj’s widow and Nicki Minaj's mother Carol Maraj was unhappy with the sentencing. She said, "Your Honor, this is not a good citizen in my eyes. He looked at him and left him [on the roadside]. Is that a good citizen?” "One year? That’s a slap in the face for the family,” said the hip-hop star's mom. She continued, "[He] just left him on a street like a dog." But it's not just Carol who's angry, fans of the hip-hop phenomenon are also pissed off with the lenient sentence.

Nicki Minaj fans react to Charles Polevich's sentencing

Nassau County Judge Howard Sturim decided to go easy on Polveich as he had no prior criminal history. As per him, Polevich's criminality was not the cause of death. The sentencing angered Nicki Minaj's fans. One user wrote, "1 year you have 2 be kidding me attempted murder 1st degree murder and 2 degree manslaughter I’m not a judge but don’t u think he should be locked up for at least 10 years #GodT."

Another user wrote, "If my parent was killed and the killer gets a year in prison …..I would definitely be waiting for that person release date to get my justice ."

One angry user said, "Only 1 year???? Wtf, his license is being suspended for only 6 months? Now if he go and do another hit and run I blame the system. How you gonna give 1 year to someone who hit and killed a man and drove away right after?"

Another user who was upset with the sentencing tweeted, "This is sick, just 1 year for k wording a person. Nickis father was a father to 3, a husband to his wife, a brother to someone and a son to someone and all the person gets for k wording him is 1 year un prison? He deserves life in prison for taking a life away!"
