NFL player Chris Smith who plays for the Cleveland Browns lost his girlfriend Petara Cordero to a roadside accident. Cordero was pronounced dead after a tragic chain of events. 

Cordero, 26, was killed in front of Smith after being struck by a car on September 11, the team said in a statement. Her untimely death comes just a week after she and Smith welcomed a baby girl together, Haven Harris Smith. Cordero was sitting next to Smith when his Lamborghini's tire blew out causing the car to swerve and hit the median. 

As per Brown's statement, the accident took place on the I-90 West in Cleveland. As reported by local station News 5, Cordero was able to get off the car uninjured but was fatally struck by an oncoming Mazda car. Post being taken to the Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, she was pronounced dead. 

The Cleveland police spoke to CNN and revealed that the driver of the Mazda car had admitted to drinking before driving. A toxicology report is currently pending. Smith had not been impaired as per a statement by the Brown's and CNN. 

Less than a month ago, Cordero had given birth to the pair's daughter Haven. They had taken to social media to announce the exciting news. Smith shared pictures of the new mother and baby on August 27. He had captioned the picture, "I’m so thankful to have another beautiful gift in this world my daughter Haven Harris Smith. You are such a blessing to me and your mother!! Love you Petara and Baby Haven❤️❤️❤️." 

 

Cordero had also shared a few pictures on Instagram. A few days before her tragic death, she had also shared a picture of Smith kissing her on the forehead. She had captioned the picture, "This a forever thing, I love you through everything." The team owners of Browns, Dee, and Jimmy Haslam had some words of support for Smith. 

They shared that he will be excused from all team activities to grieve "as he sees best fit". The Haslam's statement read, "Words cannot describe the sorrow we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara. Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family, and the Cordero family."
