New York waitress unleashes epic rant after receiving $70 tip on $700 bill
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: An American waitress expressed her frustrations over the disappointing tips she receives from holidaymakers who claim to be "over the moon" about the service they received. The worker explained that she got only a minimal tip of $70 on a $700 bill which is half the amount of money that she was expecting.
She took to Twitter earlier this week to vent her frustration. "This table just left $70 on a $700 check after chilling for hours", she said. My manager even asked about their service and they were over the moon about my service so he explained the customary tip is 20 percent and they were like 'OK' and left."

The waitress added, "Oh God I already know that this is going to get the most insufferable 'tipping isn't mandatory, just get a new job or magically change the laws overnight, I am such a genius to say this' type of replies imaginable."
lmao i fucking hate europeans sometimes on god. this table just left $70 on a $700 check after chilling for HOURS. my manager even asked about their service and they were OVER THE MOON about my service so he explained the customary tip is 20% and they were like “ok.” and left

The tip prompted the waitress to say she "f**king hate[s] Europeans sometimes", with her frustration likely coming in part from the cultural differences in tipping between Europe and the US, where the latter depend heavily on tips to make a decent income.
American servers usually expect an additional 15 to 20 percent on top of the overall bill unlike England and other European nations where tipping is more of a personal decision than an expectation.

'Only Americans would complain about a $70 tip'
Madison's frustration sparked debate online as Twitter users discussed whether the $70 tip that she received was enough or not. One Twitter user said, "Only Americans would complain about a $70 tip" while another replied, "Tip culture almost borders on entitlement because why are you shaming people for giving you $70 for doing a job you're already paid to do?"

One Twitter user spoke in favor of the waitress by saying, "Anyway sorry to bother you after getting so much hate. I don't think you are wrong, if they spend 700 on food they very likely could've tipped you. I think the main reason we don't tip it's because our wages are low but that doesn't apply to this case. Sorry and have a nice day!" One user wrote, "The problem with America is you are expected to tip for everything. The paper bureaucracy involved in buying a pint is ridiculous. By the end of my recent 4 day stay I felt like I was mugged." Another replied, "Cultural misunderstandings work both ways. Across most of Europe staff are paid properly and so don’t need tips to get by. Seems like an issue of educating your guests as I’m sure they don’t do this to be offensive."
