What is the significance of National Kindergarten Day?

National Kindergarten Day was started to honor Friedrich Wilhelm August Frobel, who started the first kindergarten in the world, every year on his birthday, April 21.

The word kindergarten comes from the German words “kinder," which means children, and “garten," which means garden. The word signifies that children, like plants in the garden, need the utmost care and nurturing. In the US, 3.5 million children are enrolled in kindergarten every year.

3 activities to celebrate the occasion

1. Art projects

A lot of children like to draw and are amazed by colorful pictures. Set up an art station with materials such as crayons, markers, paints and other materials to do art projects. Ask them to draw what they like, be it their favorite animal or something from their imagination. This activity helps them develop their creativity.

2. Storytime

This will be an interactive and interesting activity for every child because they love to hear stories. Read their favorite books to them. It could be anything, fairytales, animals or nature. You can also ask questions so the child can give their own perspectives and what they learnt from the story.

3. Create a garden

Gardening helps teach children about nature and the importance of taking care of living things. This can be a fun activity too as children can learn about different flowers and plants. Ask children to gather some soil and seeds and you can help children create their own garden.
