'Work came first': Miley Cyrus reveals moment she realized Liam Hemsworth marriage was over
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Miley Cyrus has opened up about the moment she realized her short-lived marriage to her long-time love, Liam Hemsworth, was coming to an end.
The 'Flowers' singer, 30, and the actor, 33, had a tumultuous on-and-off relationship for nearly a decade before tying the knot in December 2018. However, the marriage lasted only 8 months. They attributed the split to "irreconcilable differences."
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's divorce
Miley revealed that she came to the decision to leave her husband during the 2019 Glastonbury Festival in England, as per Daily Mail.
"Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision happened that me and Liam's commitment to being married just really came from, of course, a place of love first — because we'd been together for 10 years — but also from a place of trauma," the singer said.
"That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first. And I guess now that's why it's so important to me for me to not be the case [anymore]," said the 'Bangerz' singer, adding, "The human comes first."
Miley went on to provide more details about her past relationship and the motivation behind her and Liam's decision to marry in 2018. She explained that if it weren't for the loss of their home in the Malibu fires, they probably wouldn't have taken that step, according to Grazia.
"We were together since 16," Miley said. "Our house burned down. We had been like, engaged—I don’t know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married."
"I had so much and it was all gone, every song I had ever written was in that house," she continued. "I ran toward the fire."
"You’re attracted to that heat and me being an intense person and not wanting to sit with it, and not wanting to go, you know, 'What could be purposeful about this?' I just clung to what I had left of that house, which was me and him. And I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will," she said.
Why did Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth get divorced?
Miley revealed that they separated because the two had numerous issues in their lives. "There was too much conflict," she said. "When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting."
