Former George Bush staffer Steve Schmidt revealed that the fly that landed on Mike Pence's head during the VP debate had been "the mark of the devil". Schmidt shared that the fly had been a biblical symbol of evil. While speaking to MSNBC's Ari Melber on Thursday, October 8, Schmidt opened up on his thoughts on Pence's vice presidential debate where he faced Kamala Harris.

Schmidt revealed, "I don’t think it’s ever a good sign when a fly lands on your head for two minutes. You know that’s a sign all through the history of sin, and historically, biblically."

He added, "You know a fly, he who commands the fly, has always been seen historically as the mark of the devil." Melber then pointed out how the fly could have landed on anyone and asked Schmidt whether he was joking. Schmidt responded by saying that it was related to 'karma'.

Schmidt said, "It landed on Mike Pence, and it says something. Something karmic about the status of the campaign." It is possible that Schmidt had been referring to the biblical name Beelzebub, which is another name for Satan that translates from Hebrew as "Lord of the Flies".

Schmidt, John Weaver, Republican lawyer George Conway, and Republican consultant Rick Wilson had launched a super-PAC in December to make sure Trump does not get re-elected.

The group revealed that they would support whichever candidate "even if that means Democratic control of the Senate and an expanded Democratic majority in the House" via an open letter published in The New York Times.

Many social media users responded to Schmidt's comments on Twitter. One such user had written, "Editted part of speech when he snapped it up with his tongue and chewed on it! Big swallow! I saw edited part. It was sickening. He is the Antichrist people. A fly indicates the man of sin is present. Ewww."

Another user chimed in, "The fly knows evil...who here saw Amityville Horror? The flies swarmed the devil House! Biblically speaking, #SteveSchmidt is 100% correct. And politically speaking, the fly knows a pile of shit when it sees one #JustSayin."

"I thought the same thing about #TheFly #TheFlyOnPencesHead Immediately. I was stopped cold. how could a fly have gotten in there? my 1st thot: isn't that a sign of the devil? pretty eerie if you ask me. loved your reply to Ari, "but it didn't. it landed on Pence," commented yet another user.

We had earlier reported that Pence seemed to be ignorant of the insect's presence. A local TV news reporter from California clocked the fly's screen time and it turned out to be exactly two minutes and three seconds, as per a New York Times report. The black fly was hard to miss against Pence's white hair and immediately captivated social media.

We had also shared how Pence had been accused of "mansplaining". Mansplaining, a pejorative term, means to explain something to a woman in a condescending, overconfident or oversimplified manner. Democratic vice-presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris slammed Pence during the debate telling the Republican that she will not be lectured by him over criminal justice reform. Harris told Pence, "I will not sit here and be lectured by the vice president on what it means to enforce the laws of our country."
