Born on July 17, 1973, Charles grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and hails from a Haitian family. Her parents separated in her childhood and she was brought up by a single mother. Charles was born and brought up in Brooklyn, New York. Hence, her identity is American, yet her nationality is Haitian and not Jamaican.
