Mickey Rourke recently joined the current fan-favorite host Piers Morgan on his show 'Piers Morgan Uncensored' on Monday, July 11, and as expected, the episode stirred up a controversy. During the show, when Rourke was talking about actors that he likes, Morgan quickly cut him off and asked him about his opinion on Tom Cruise, who has recently been under the spotlight ever since his movie 'Top Gun: Maverick' broke the box office. The actor took a break and called Cruise "irrelevant". To which, Morgan replied with a delayed and sarcastic "fascinating."

Tom Cruise's follow-up to 1986’s 'Top Gun' was released after 35 years and ended up grossing more than a billion dollars worldwide. However, this feat did not impress Rourke. When asked about the movie and Cruise's role in it, the 'Iron Man 2' actor said, "That doesn’t mean sh** to me. The guy’s been doing the same effing part for 35 years. I got no respect for that. He continued, "I don’t care about money and power. I care about when I watch Al Pacino work and Chris Walken and De Niro’s early work and Richard Harris’s work and Ray Winstone’s work. That’s the kind of actor I want to be like. Monty Clift and Brando back in the day.”

Morgan asked, "You don’t think Tom Cruise is a good actor?" To which, the 69-year-old actor replied, "I think he’s irrelevant, in my world." Cruise's 'Top Gun: Maverick' came as a breathe of fresh air at the box office because superhero movies were dominating the collections and Cruise managed to break the streak. On the other hand, Rourke sneakily dissed Marvel actors in 2021 when he was binge-watching 'Law & Order: SVU', calling it "real acting" unlike Marvel movies. His comments on Tom Cruise surely didn't sit well with fans as they rushed to defend the actor who played Ethan Hunt in the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise.

Fans slam Mickey Rourke for his remarks on Tom Cruise

One user said, "Rain Man/Born in the 4th of July/Interview with a Vampire/Jerry Maguire/Magnolia/Tropic Thunder - What do these six movies have in common? They all showed Tom Cruise’s range. When he wants to act, he can. Now imagine Mickey Rourke in any of these roles."

Another user wrote, "Lol what? Tom Cruise is different in virtually every film. How do you compare Charlie Babbitt to Ethan Hunt or Vincent (Collateral) to Frank Mackey or Lestat to Ron Kovic? I'm not even that big of a fan but Jesus Christ."

One user claimed that Rourke is the one who's not relevant anymore, saying, "Mickey……baby…..WTF Happened to You? You were actually cool back in the day when you were relevant,,, Meanwhile Tom Cruise is making blockbusters like TopGun2 that has literally pulled in over a billion dollars…."

Another user wrote. "Sorry, but what exactly has Mickey Rourke done in the last 20 years except for get a lot of plastic surgery making him unrecognizable? Nobody knows who he is, and I’d say couldn’t care less about his opinion of Tom Cruise’s movies."

Sounds like a guy stirring the pot to be 'relevant'. Didn't do a very good job."
