Met Gala 2021: Allyson Felix to Emma Raducanu, here's how the athletes stole the show
The Met Gala 2021 saw our favorite sports icons score massive points for their fashion game
After a hiatus of nearly one and a half years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Met Gala is back again, with our favorite celebrities walking down the red carpet looking their absolute best. Hosted this year by Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka, the Met Gala 2021 is soon becoming a night to remember with celebrities bringing the theme 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion' to life.
While Hollywood A-listers and artists stunned on the red carpet, as usual, the athletes emerged as the unexpected showstoppers this time. From Allyson Felix, Venus Williams, Simone Biles to Emma Raducanu, the Met Gala 2021 saw our favorite sports icons acing their fashion game. Here is a list of athletes who stole the show at one of the biggest red carpet events of the year.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka, who is also the co-chair of the Met Gala 2021, arrived hand in hand with her boyfriend Cordae. She honored her Japanese and Haitian heritage with a colorful Louis Vuitton ruffled dress, paired with a bright-red Obi belt and bold makeup. Though the look was snubbed by many for being too bizarre and haphazard, it did uphold the multi-cultural spirit of the event.
Allyson Felix made a grand entrance and stole the show in her gorgeous Kim Jones gown. The Olympian track and field sprinter traded her running shoes for heels and looked divine in the pastel blue high neck dress with a peekaboo neckline. It was adorned with over 240,000 ostrich feathers and crystal beads.
Star gymnast Simone Biles has been at the center of controversy and criticism ever since she withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics 2020 for tending to her mental health. However, the athlete seems to have developed a knack for ruling the red carpet. A day after her stunning appearance at the MTV VMAs 2021, Simone Biles attended the Met Gala 2021 in an 88-pound three-layered dress, designed by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk of Area. The dress comprised a glittering and starry black catsuit worn with a mini dress, over which she sported a massive hand-embellished skirt adorned with Swarovski crystals.
Emma Raducanu created history recently by becoming the first British female tennis player to win the US Open in 44 years. The 18-year-old athlete made her Met Gala Debut on September 13 in a printed monochrome look by Chanel. Her dress comprised a cut-out at the waist adorned with a bejeweled pearl belt. She paired her dress with black boots and diamond earrings.
Olympian gymnast Sunisa Lee stayed true to her 'golden girl' epithet by donning his metallic gold ensemble at the Met Gala.
Tennis icon Serena Williams attended the Met Gala with husband Alex Ohanian while looking pretty in pink. She wore a superhero-inspired lace bodysuit and paired it with a feathered cape in every shade of pink.
The elder Williams sister set the red carpet on fire in a dazzling red satin gown by Prabal Gurung. Venus Williams gushed about her fashionista niece and Serena Williams' daughter Alexis Olympia, as she walked in her off-shoulder dress with a ruffled neckline and long train.
Stephen and Ayesha Curry
NBA star Stephen Curry and his actress wife Ayesha Curry showed up in a stunning couple ensemble by Atelier Versace.
Footballer Megan Rapinoe looked every bit American in a brilliant red suit with a star-spangled blue shirt. She completed her look with a clutch bearing the message 'In Gay We Trust'.
Though not technically an athlete, NFL wife and singer Ciara's Met Gala 2021 dress was a nod to her husband Russell Wilson — the NFL star with Seattle Seahawks. Ciara donned a shimmering neon green dress sporting Wilson's jersey number 3. The long-sleeved Dundas gown was cut out on the sides while it also had dramatic shoulder pads identical to NFL jerseys. She sported emerald green eye shadow and carried a Wilson's Super Bowl ring as the ultimate accessory.
