Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp have split after eight years of being in an on-and-off relationship, after announcing their engagement in November 2018.

“She’d had enough and ended [their engagement],” a source told US Weekly. “She has no regrets.”

The 57-year-old actress excitedly took to Instagram last year to announce to the world that she was engaged to the 68-year-old singer. “ENGAGED!” she captioned an illustration on the social media platform. A month later, when John was asked what made him pop the question, he told the "Today" show: "One can only imagine I'm probably not the easiest guy to get along with. So let's leave it at that."

His hesitance in answering the question might have been because of the instability that the duo faced in their relationship. Meg and John were first romantically linked in 2011. They broke up in 2014 before reconciling later that year, only to call it quits again in 2015. They finally reunited once more in 2017.

During one of the "off" periods of their relationship, John joked about how "women hate" him on Howard Stern's show. "I think it's because I'm a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I'm moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that's me," he said, adding, "I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death."

Months after announcing her engagement, the "You've Got Mail" actress refused to dwell on her wedding plans. "Yes, I’m going to get married at some point," she told InStyle in an August interview. "But for now this engagement thing is a state of grace."

Instead of rumors of an upcoming wedding, speculations about a looming breakup started swirling when Meg was spotted in Los Angeles without her engagement ring recently.

Meg was previously married to Dennis Quaid from 1991 to 2001. John, on the other hand, has had three failed marriages in the past. He was married to Priscilla Esterline from 1970 to 1981, to Victoria Granucci from 1981 to 1989, and to Elaine Irwin from 1992 to 2011.
