'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' season 7 needs to bring back the Ghost Rider and Grant Ward to top off their character arcs

In a plotline that includes time travel and a new breed of super villains, the team can certainly bring these two characters back to gain some much-needed firepower
UPDATED AUG 5, 2019

This article contains spoilers of 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'  season 6 finale

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' ended with a surprise for fans. The two-hour finale saw characters die, live, die and somehow come back to life again. The creators seemed to have pulled an 'Avengers: Endgame' by introducing the concept of time travel, which in its own way is pretty ingenious.

Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is also back— well, sort of. And, it is finally revealed that Coulson is a machine.

The finale ended with everyone traveling back in time to 1931.

With season 6 now officially done, the focus is on season 7 which will also be the final time we see the agents in action.

While there have been several twists and turns, the core cast has always remained the same — Gregg as Coulson,  Daisy Johnson aka Quake (Chloe Bennet), Melinda May (Mind-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Iain de Caestecker), and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).

The core of season 6's cast also includes Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie (Henry Simmons), who made his appearance in season 2, and Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), who joined the show in season 3.

Ward has toggled between hero and anti-hero. (IMDb)

However, there are two main characters who have been pivotal to the show's plot points and their return would not just be welcomed, but also rounds off their story arcs perfectly. Here's who we think must return to the show in the upcoming installment.

Ghost Rider

Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) was the new addition in season 4 and his introduction was a hit with the audience. Last we saw, he was instrumental in helping the team defeat Eli Morrow, an evil scientist, and Robbie's maternal uncle. The fact that he was one of the anti-heroes didn't matter as the plotline suggested that he was the only one who could take on Morrow.

It's also a notable point as the hero is now getting his own series. The addition may also hint at what's in store for the character's future after 'Marvel's AoS.'  It is challenging to see how and where they fit his character in, but the anti-hero has already proved that he is a force to reckon with if the team is taking on evil forces they haven't encountered before.

Grant Ward

Brett Dalton's Grant Ward has probably got one of the craziest plotlines in the series. He was introduced as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and then it was revealed that he was team HYDRA. He then goes on to start his own division of HYDRA in a bid to accomplish the mission of bringing the most powerful inhuman to earth. This led to the introduction of Hive, which takes possession of Ward's body after he was killed by Coulson.

After playing these versions, Ward still returned again in season 4 as the hero. With time travel now as part of the storyline in the final installment, Ward's character would be a perfect addition to the series, even if it is him playing the antagonist.

Who do you think should be the ones making a return in season 7?

Meanwhile, while you wait for the new season, you can watch the cast talk about the evolution of their characters at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 here:

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 7 will premiere on ABC in the summer of 2020.
