When filmmaker Martin Scorsese criticized Marvel movies earlier this year, he must have expected outrage and trolling. What he possibly did not expect was getting trolled by his own daughter. Especially during Christmas.

Francesca Scorsese, the 20-year-old daughter of ‘The Irishman’ director, shared a picture of her pre-Christmas preparations on her Instagram story. In the photo, one can clearly see that the gift for her dad was wrapped in paper bearing The Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America. She wrote, “Look what I’m wrapping my dad’s Xmas gifts in”, followed by the crying-laughing emoji.

She also seemed to have a lot of extra Marvel-themed wrapping paper, just in case.

The Scorsese versus Marvel debate began in October when the septuagenarian filmmaker, in an interview with Empire Magazine had criticized the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. “I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese said. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Many filmmakers agreed with Scorsese, with Francis Ford Coppola calling the films “despicable”, Ken Loach attributing to them as a “cynical exercise” and Pedro Almodovar accusing them of being "neutered”.

On the other hand, Disney CEO Bob Iger -- Disney is the parent company of Marvel Studios -- had called Scorsese’s comments “nasty” and “not fair to the people who are making the movies.”

Scorsese's take on Marvel movies instantly polarized the internet too in two factions.

Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, had a hilarious response to Scorsese's daughter's post.

“Makes me feel less embarrassed by that Shutter Island paper my nephew wrapped my gifts in,” Gunn quipped, referring to the Scorsese directed, Leonardo DiCaprio starrer.
