Adam Levine tears off his shirt at Super Bowl leaving Janet Jackson fans outraged over gender double standards
The 'Girls Like You' hitman was also criticized on social media for his 'dad dancing' as rapper Travis Scott performed his hit song 'Sicko Mode'
As if performing at the controversial show wasn't enough, Maroon 5's frontman Adam Levine got called out for flashing his nipples during their Super Bowl LIII half-time show at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday. "Super Bowl halftime nipple rules feel inconsistent," 'Always Late ESPN' host Katie Nolan tweeted.
It became a big deal because back in 2004, disgraced Viacom CEO Les Moonves tried to destroy Janet Jackson's career after her infamous 'wardrobe malfunction' alongside Justin Timberlake at the half-time show. The 52-year old diva's nipples were exposed for about half a second, but the FCC went on to fine CBS $550K, reports the Daily Mail.
"Okay. Hold up," Oscar-nominated actress Rosie Perez tweeted. "Are they going to go in and penalize #AdamLevine for showing his t**s like they did @JanetJackson? Just asking." Another Twitter user Tunde B imagined the 'Rhythm Nation' hitmaker "seeing Adam Levine shirtless and I know she somewhere furious right now."
"I'm more offended seeing Adam Levine's nipples than I was Janet Jackson's," user Gia Cognata noted. "Adam Levine took his shirt off," another user shared. "And my co-worker yelled 'what?! We can't see Janet Jackson's nipple but we can see HIS?' And we are HOWLING."
"If two Adam Levine nipples were approved then someone owes Janet Jackson a big apology," user Katie Zack wrote. Alicia Barry Whitman, another social media user, was all for a shirtless Levine but pointed out: "Why are we ok with him stripping down and freaking when Janet has a nip slip?"
The 'Girls Like You' hitman was also criticized on social media for his 'dad dancing' as rapper Travis Scott performed his hit song 'Sicko Mode'. Multiple people on social media began sharing memes of Katy Perry busting a move as well as Steve Carrell from 'The Office' poking fun of Levine's moves.
"Adam Levine has never looked so much like a suburban dad than when he was jump-dancing aimlessly next to Travis Scott," Lili Rebelo commented. Another user called Yamina quipped: "Adam Levine dancing to 'Sicko Mode' is what every frat boy looks like."
The LA pop band only got the gig by default after Rihanna, the NFL's first choice, turned it down in October out of support for Colin Kaepernick's peaceful kneeling protest. Critics were also not too kind about the band's medley of songs during the performance including hits like 'Harder to Breathe', 'This Love', 'She Will Be Loved', 'Sugar', and 'Moves Like Jagger'.
