ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA: A Deputy US Marshal is convicted and facing 20 years in prison after orchestrating a 'rape fantasy' on his former wife by luring Craigslist users and blaming it on his ex-girlfriend. Ian Diaz, 44, and his wife Angela Diaz, 38, allegedly posted fake Craigslist ads inviting men to rape the latter, and blaming it on Michelle Hadley, 36.

The twisted couple allegedly sent themselves "harassing and threatening messages," and invited men to sexually assault Angela, under Hadley's name. Ian was so "hell-bent on punishing her (Hadley) after their relationship dissolved," that he abused his position and reported to cops that Hadley was targeting him and his then wife, Angela. Hadley was arrested and jailed for 88 days until authorities uncovered the couple's evil act and sued Diaz and Anaheim Police Department. Hadley claimed that the Anaheim Police Department refused to properly investigate Diaz, in a 2017 lawsuit,

How did Ian and Angela Diaz falsely implicate Michelle Hadley?

In 2016, Diaz and Angela create a fake online persona and put advertisements on Craiglist for 'rape fantasies,' where men would come to Angela's condo thinking the sexual encounter would be consensual but it would turn out to be just the opposite. Initially, Diaz contacted the police and said they were targeted by men in their house, accusing Hadley. He allegedly told cops that his ex-girlfriend needed to be "in f***ing cuffs and in a padded room." He added that he "investigates threats made to federal judges and prosecutors as part of his work as a Deputy United States Marshal and that he has 'never seen anything like this," reported Daily Mail.

To prove their sadistic claims, Ian texted another Craigslist user in the hope that he would come to the condo. After this Angela called 911 and reported she had been sexually assaulted and her husband's ex-girlfriend was responsible. Hailey was arrested and charged with scores of sex crimes and spent three months in prison. However, the pair's vicious plan was uncovered after police found an IP address used to send the emails was linked to Diaz's Anaheim condominium. They then found out Angela used VPN and third-party proxy servers to disguise her IP address and send the emails to herself.

In 2017, the 38-year-old was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to 10 felony and 22 misdemeanor charges. While Diaz was also convicted after the Department of Justice launched a probe and he was indicted in 2021. The police earlier claimed they did not have enough evidence to charge him at the time. The 44-year-old has been convicted of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of a federal matter. In a lawsuit, Hadley said, "There's absolutely no doubt in my head about who did this. There never has been," reported a source.

Ian Diaz and Michelle Hadley's relationship

In 2013, Hadley met Ian on a dating site, after she divorced her high school sweetheart, just four years into the marriage. The pair moved in together, with Hadley claiming Ian soon started to exhibit controlling behavior. He would pressure her into wearing revealing clothes and force her to quit her job and take up a marketing job. She says the job was at Ian's 'favorite place' -- Disneyland Resort -- where he once worked. Hadley claims he wanted her to work there so his colleagues could keep an eye on her. She said she agreed to his demands because she wanted to make him happy. Although a motive behind Ian's sadist act is believed to be that he didn't want Hadley to show further interest in a property the pair had jointly owned.

"Ian Diaz abused his position as a deputy U.S. Marshal to execute an intricate cyberstalking scheme that framed an innocent person for sexual assault, leading to her unjust imprisonment for 88 days," said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A Polite Jr of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. "As this prosecution demonstrates, the Criminal Division is committed to preserving the public's confidence in law enforcement by holding accountable any official who violates their oath of office and victimizes the community they are sworn to serve." Diaz is scheduled to be sentenced on June 30.
