Liza Minnelli struggles with dementia, friends say 'she often fidgets and her hands shake'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Liza Minnelli, Hollywood's biggest star, is locked in a desperate struggle with dementia which she is reportedly losing. The iconic actress, singer, and dancer has been struggling with multiple issues over the years which included encephalitis, alcoholism, a jaw bone injury, and more.
The 77-year-old 'Cabret' legend was last seen in public in September 2022. Even though she looked frail and was supported by two individuals, the star walked to her car on her own suggesting improved health after a serious battle with encephalitis in 2000 that doctors predicted will leave her wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life.
'Liza often fidgets and her hands shake'
Now the Oscar-winning Songbirds health update is worrying as RadarOnline citing sources reveals that Judy Garland's daughter is fast losing her cognitive abilities. She is receiving round-the-clock care from a nurse in her Los Angeles home. “Liza often fidgets, her hands shake, and she looks horrible,” an insider told the outlet. “She sometimes doesn’t know who she’s talking to and has a hard time focusing.”
'She didn’t want people to remember her that way'
The report further describes her upsetting Oscar presence in 2022 which despite her health issues was an important moment in her life as "Liza rarely leaves the house anymore." The insider said, "She didn’t want people to remember her that way.” Michael Feinstein, singer and pianist, and friend of Minnelli at the time told Guardian that Liza was "forced" to present the best picture award in the wheelchair alongside Lady Gaga which left her "very disappointed."
"She only agreed to appear at the Oscars if she would be in a director’s chair because she’s been having back trouble,” said Feinstein at the time while speaking on 'SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.'
'Liza is almost broke'
The friend further revealed Liza who has increasingly cut off from her friends, family, and finances is "almost broke." This in return has resulted in those who Liza helped no longer receiving any form of help. "It’s a tragic situation for everyone involved.” After Liza's 2000 health issue, which even predicted she may never sing again., the star bounced back taking vocal and dancing lessons. In 2001, Liiza ended up singing 'New York, New York' on 'The Rosie O’Donnell Show.' The 'Bye Bye Blackbird' singer also performed at the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special at Madison Square Garden in New York City that same year, after being asked by Michael Jackson himself. She sang 'You Are Not Alone' and 'Never Never Land' during the show, as per Hollywood Life.
'There's no way Liza would miss this unless something was seriously wrong'
In 2007, she broke her jawbone after a fall from the stage while performing. In 2013 she also broke both of her wrists and in 2014 her back was hurt after a dog jumped on her. Liza has also suffered three miscarriages in her was left with a hiatal hernia in the process to save her unborn child.
Minnelli lost most of her $50 million wealth to her fourth husband David Gest during their five-year marriage, which ended in 2007. The latest report says the singer now lives quiet and modest life far away from the glamour of her young life. Liza also missed the opening night of the Broadway musical New York, New York, last month which is based on the film and song that transformed her life. "There's no way Liza would miss this unless something was seriously wrong," an insider told the outlet at the time. "Her health isn't good. She's using a wheelchair and doesn't get out much — and after moving to California, the trip back to New York would have been too much."
