Wearing face masks has been a topic of contention in the United States since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. A raging political issue – with numerous Republicans, and the right-wing in general, vehemently opposing face masks as a breach of their fundamental rights – the topic has returned to the limelight ever since President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were tested coronavirus positive.

Celebrities who have previously been seen without a mask at the beginning of the pandemic – like Ana de Armas and Justin Bieber – have made sure to not leave home without one since then. Dua Lipa and Jaden Smith, too, have been criticized for attending parties in the middle of the pandemic and not having masks on. Other celebrities, like Kanye West, have dragged on Twitter for not covering their nose while having a mask on. Some other examples of celebrities facing criticism from angry fans for denouncing face masks include former Oasis member Noel Gallagher and legendary singer-songwriter Van Morrison who even released tracks to protest mandatory face masks.

The latest target of the internet's anger is Lana Del Rey. The 'Blue Jeans' singer faced flack from angry Twitter users for turning up at a Los Angeles Barnes & Noble to sign copies of her debut poetry collection titled 'Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass' wearing a mesh mask. One user, pointing out Lana's choice of mask, tweeted, "My friend saw Lana del Rey out and about in that same embellished-mesh mask from Interview Magazine feature... which is NOT A SAFE MASK leading me to wonder... is Lana del Rey anti-mask??"

A fan of Lana, confused about how to feel about the entire episode, wrote, "Lana Del Rey not wearing a real face mask on her book signing. I don't know what to feel about this. SMH," while another Lana fan, defending her, informed, "before you all drag Lana Del Rey, there's a plastic protector under that mask but yeah still should've worn an appropriate mask if you're going Instagram Live."

A different Twitter user, more harsh upon the singer than the others, said, "Lana Del Rey being a dumb b**ch once again, wearing a mask isn’t protecting others, hosting a book signing and having it shut down because they couldn’t follow the 6ft distance rule," while a Melania Trump parody account added, ".@LanaDelRey Please do not wear a mesh mask. They are useless and do not protect you or others. I made the same mistake and now I am in a situation that nobody deserves to be in. Thank you for supporting me and my husband and stay safe!"

A Lana 'stan', disappointed by the singer's choice of mask, tweeted, "Lana Del Rey...what the fuck. After I defend you, you go and do this. Please your making hard to be a Stan just wear your mask."

Comparing Lana to a 'random Karen', a user posted, "Lana Del Rey wearing a face mask // a random Karen wearing a face mask," while another, criticizing her fishnet mask, wrote, "What is wrong with Lana del Rey like she’s literally not okay why is she wearing a fishnet mask, like is this supposed to be a statement or something."

A fan of Lana, going softer on the 'Young and Beautiful' hitmaker, said, "OKAY LOOK. I love Lana Del Rey. I've spent money on her merch. I've gone to her concerts. and I love her music. but I am really frustrated with the choice of doing a book signing during a pandemic and seemingly not wearing a proper mask," while another user, calling the singer 'stupid', added, "How stupid is @LanaDelRey for wearing this mask to a large book signing and taking pictures with fans. We get it that you’re pretty but do better."
