'Tone deaf' Kim Kardashian blasted for making Brandon Bernard's execution 'all about her'

Kim Kardashian is being slammed for the comment she made about the 2020 execution of convicted killer Brandon Bernard. The reality television star had campaigned to save Bernard, but he was executed on December 9, 2020. Political commentator Van Jones shared a clip from his podcast 'Uncommon Ground' where guest-star Kardashian recalled the events leading up to Bernard's death and how badly they affected her.

"I was working on the Brandon Bernard case, and he was, in fact, executed, and I remember crying and feeling so helpless. It was his last phone call, and he was telling me, like, 'Don't cry, it's gonna be okay.' You know, hearing that he was worried that he'd be claustrophobic in the chair... and then on his last call when he was in the execution room, he said, 'Please tell Kim I'm not claustrophobic, it's okay.' Moments like that – I'm like if only someone could see my day," she revealed in the clip.

"I'm like hysterically crying, calling every governor that I could possibly imagine to try to stop someone's execution, and then I have to run into, you know, a Skims fitting, and I'm fitting and I'm crying and I can't really get my work done, and then I have to, you know - it was just such a whirlwind of a day," recalled the 41-year-old social media personality.

Internet users were quick to slam the businesswoman for making the execution about herself. One tweet said, "Only Kim Kardashian could make a criminal’s execution all about herself - and she even worked in a Skims promo." Another read, "We may have to have a moment of silence for interruption of her day rather than the man who died."

A third wrote, "She don't give a f**k about the person getting executed it's all about her she's one narcissistic person she thinks the world revolves around her only her there's a man that's going to die and execution and she's worrying about her skims promo she could have took time," while a fourth felt, "Aggravatingly self-centered [mind-blown emoji]." 

Piers Morgan wrote, "Repulsively tone-deaf." Another user tweeted, "Once thought people were using the word 'narcissism' too much, well things like this being trying to convince me otherwise." A third added, "She made it about herself jeez."

Hours before Bernard's execution, Kardashian posted multiple tweets about he she felt regarding the situation. "Been crying all morning. Brandon Bernard will be executed in 6 hours," read one tweet, while another said, "Brandon Bernard will be executed in 5 hours and all I can think about is his family and children and how they will feel when their loved one is gone. [crying emoji] [broken heart emoji]."

She then tweeted, "2 hours until Brandon Bernard is executed. My heart breaks for everyone involved, including the victims families and in no way am I diminishing the loss their family has been through," and followed it up by, "1 hour until Brandon Bernard will be executed. It’s #HumanRightsDay and here in the United States we are executing someone who was 18 at the time of the crime, was not the shooter and has rehabilitated himself. So shameful. [broken heart emoji]."
