Kate Middleton has taken Harry and Meghan Markle's split from the royal family "badly" and is "very sad" about the whole situation, a royal source has claimed.

All eyes were on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they flew down from Canada for their final official engagement as royals at this week's Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, and the tension between them and the Cambridges was palpable. Meghan was snapped mouthing "hello" and giving a little wave to Kate, only for her sister-in-law to seemingly avoid eye contact and greet Sophie Wessex instead. It was in stark contrast to last year when Kate embraced Meghan, then heavily pregnant, in front of the cameras.

"Possibly she was tired but she didn’t look overjoyed," a royal source told Vanity Fair. "To be honest I think Kate has taken it all badly. She Harry and William were once such a happy trio, she thinks what has happened is all very sad."

Her sadness may also have to do with her sadness over the demise of her relationship with Harry. "She wishes she could speak to Harry. She misses him and fears she’ll never be close to him again," a source had said in January.

Harry and William seemingly healed their two-year rift last month thanks to some intervention from Kate and Meghan after they realized it was "now or never" but they are still not in regular touch with each other.

They're not close as they once were either, and while they acknowledged each other with a brief smile at the service, they sat a row apart and showed no obvious signs of warmth. Their drifting apart is said to be a source of sadness for the Queen.

"It’s not been easy for anyone," said a source close to Harry and Meghan, who also revealed their visit had brought out strong feelings in the royal family. "I think they’re both pretty emotional."

It's little surprise they feel that way considering reports that tensions were high behind the scenes after they were informed they would not be joining the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and the Cambridges for the Queen's procession into the abbey.

While Harry and Meghan will remain patron and vice patron of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust following their official retirement from the royal family on March 31, they will no longer carry out official royal visits on behalf of the Queen around the commonwealth.

Their office in Buckingham Palace and their entire communications team at the palace will be shut down following their move as well.
