Trudeau welcomes Prince Harry and Meghan to Canada where they will be spending Christmas: 'You’re among friends’
Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle have decided to spend their Christmas with their son Archie in Canada. The Prime Minister of the country, Justin Trudeau, rolled out the red carpet for the royal couple and their son while he welcomed them on Twitter.
He wrote, "Prince Harry, Meghan, and Archie, we’re all wishing you a quiet and blessed stay in Canada. You’re among friends, and always welcome here."
The couple had earlier announced that they would be taking six weeks off at the end of the year to spend some "quality time" together. The palace then confirmed that the couple is "spending private family time in Canada."
The statement further said, "The decision to base themselves in Canada reflects the importance of this Commonwealth country to them both. Whilst this email confirms the country they are taking their family time in, for security reasons we will not be releasing any further details and request that their privacy is respected."
The statement continued, "The Duke of Sussex has been a frequent visitor to Canada over many years, and it was also home to The Duchess for seven years before she became a member of the Royal Family. They are enjoying sharing the warmth of the Canadian people and the beauty of the landscape with their young son."
Canada holds a special place in both Harry and Meghan's life as it was at Prince Harry's Invictus Games in Toronto that the couple made their first official appearance together. It is also in Canada that Duchess Meghan had spent time while she worked on her TV show 'Suits'.
It was in November that the couple had announced that they would forego Queen Elizabeth II's traditional Christmas celebration at Sandringham. The statement from the Buckingham palace said, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the duchess’ mother, Doria."
