John Mayer canceled his Dead and Company Wednesday night, July 6, show at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs as John's father, Richard Mayer suffered a medical emergency and had to be hospitalized. The band comprising Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti posted on the band's Twitter account promising a full refund of the tickets and a complimentary full replay of the Friday night, July 1, show. 

The 44-year-old singer addressed the issue in his Instagram story saying, "This morning, my father suffered a medical emergency and was transported to the ER where he received much-needed and great care. He is now fairly stable and will continue to undergo some procedures, but as you can understand, I have to stay in NYC and can't play tonight's show in Saratoga Springs." On the other hand, Dead and Company's Twitter post read, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, tonight's Dead & Company concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center is canceled. Tickets will be refunded automatically at the original point of purchase. The remaining Dead & Company tour dates are unaffected."

Richard Mayer's current condition and the cause of the emergency are still unknown, but the singer is expected to keep his fans updated. As soon as the show got canceled and the news blew up that the singer's father was in critical condition, fans started worrying about the 94-year-old's well-being. There were also rumors of the singer's father dying. Fortunately, it turned out to be untrue. So, what do we know about Richard Mayer?

Who is Richard Mayer?

Richard, 94-year-old, is a piano player who played at a rotary club and is a retired high school principal. Married to Margaret Mayer, they have three children - Ben, John, and Carl. John and Richard have a good bond and the singer has never failed to express his love and extend his support to his father. However, Richard always wasn't so keen on seeing John pick up a guitar and rock the world. Back in 2007 interview with People, he had said, "My experience in music was everybody had a job. We were teachers, plumbers, and on the weekends we'd play. So it boiled down to saying, 'John, you have to have a Plan B.' And John said, 'I don't have a Plan B. This is it.' Trying to get him 'within the lines' — I failed and he won. And he was right."

In the same interview, John didn't fail in contributing and said, "My father is the most upstanding man I've ever met. He's not the kind of guy who says, 'Don't cash that for a week.' He wouldn't have written the check if he couldn't cash it. He's never ventured something that he couldn't complete. I'm a mess of unfinished thoughts. Really. The music world allows it, art allows it. That's where I wish I was more like my father." Ever since the news broke out, many fans sent their warm wishes to Richard for a speedy recovery. One fan said, "Sending positive energy to John Mayer’s dad in the hospital. #gratefuldead" Another user wrote, "Thoughts and prayers to John Mayer and his dad. We'll see you guys next time."

One user wrote, "I'm thoroughly loving and enjoying watching this show. I hope John Mayer's father heals quickly." Another user said, "Really sucks, I was really looking forward to the show. Glad to see the worst rumors about John Mayer’s dad don’t appear to be true though."
