Who is John Hao?

John Hao, who was shot in the back in the deadly mass shooting at MSU, is one of the two injured Chinese students who got injured. A third-year business student Guadalupe Huapillea-Perez from Florida who belongs to a migrant family is the other victim wounded.

In the GoFundMe page set up for Hao to raise funds to cover his medical expenses, his roommate Argent Qian who is also a fellow international student wrote, "The bullet severed John’s spinal cord (t7-t8) and critically injured his lungs, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down."

Qian explained Hao's health condition and also detailed his financial situation and said, "As he remains stabilized in the ICU with a breathing tube inserted in his lung, his family is facing significant financial burdens." He further added, “Due to Covid, they are already in a large amount of debt, and John’s critical injuries are adding to the pressure on the family, leaving their parents not only to pay the debt in the future but also need to take care of John without having any income, since they are in the US without speaking any English."

Hao is a 'passionate sports enthusiast'

Hao's parents who were at his side during his difficult time traveled to Michigan following the incident and were "mentally crushed," as per Qian's statement. He wrote, "John is a beloved member of our Spartan community, a leader in a student organization, and a passionate sports enthusiast," and added, "He is never able to drive to state parks to look at the stars anymore like he used to. He dreams of traveling the globe and having a career in sports management." Seeking help to meet the expenses for his treatment, Qian wrote, "We might not be able to help him get back on his feet, but we can let him know that the love in this world is beyond physical."

Is Hao still intubated?

In the recent update in Qian's statement, Hao no longer remains intubated. "He is aware of what his family is going through right now, and you guys just ease away his stress a lot!" the statement mentioned while pointing out that the overwhelming support Hao has been receiving eased his tension. As of Monday morning, February 20, the fundraiser has raised over $350,000 and Huapillea-Perez's GoFundMe account has raised over $447,000.
