LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: When Jill Biden accompanied President Joe Biden at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday for the Queen's funeral, she was dressed in a black Schiaparelli bespoke suit and with a fascinator as hair accessory. However, the first lady was slammed online for wearing a fascinator instead of a hat to the British monarch's funeral.

Fascinators are often worn at weddings and other festive occasions while a hat would be more acceptable to be worn as a sign of respect at somber events like funerals. But it appears Jill chose to drift from the dress code, by covering part of her hair with a fascinator instead.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in Bruton Street, Mayfair, London on 21 April 1926. She married Prince Philip in 1947 and ascended the throne of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth on 6 February 1952 after the death of her Father, King George VI. Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, and is succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles III.

Twitter users didn't waste any time, calling out the first lady on the apparent fashion faux pas. One user said, "Why does Jill Biden always look like such a hot mess? Nothing says 'I’m mourning for Queen Elizabeth' like a big black bow in your hair." Another user wrote, "The head piece really made my designer friends gulp and they voted for him. It's wrong all the way around, frivolous bow for a somber funeral and her buttons askew in multiple directions. A lot people gunna hate cuz they are emotional acolytes, but calling a spade a spade." Yet another user asked, "why is Jill Biden wearing a party bow on her head?" One added, "It wouldn’t be Jill without a fashion F*#k up."

Other users tweeted in Jill Biden's defense, including columnist Doug Sanders who tweeted that "Estonian TV anchor wearing a fascinator. For those who’ve never seen that (Black fascinators are perfectly appropriate funeral garb, by the way — I see on the screen that Jill Biden has just entered wearing one). Another wrote, "Okay but Dr. Jill Biden looks so cute with that bow hairband."

After the funeral, the late Queen Elizabeth II was later laid to rest in a private family service beneath St George's Chapel with her husband of 73 years Prince Philip, her sister Margaret and her parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Jill, in the official condolences book, wrote, "Queen Elizabeth II lived her life for the people she served with wisdom and grace. We will never forget her warmth, kindness, and the conversations we shared.”
