James Gunn asks Internet to name best time travel movie that isn't 'BTTF' and a sleeper Christopher Reeve movie wins
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Between basking in the success of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ and casting A-listers for ‘Superman: Legacy’, James Gunn has found himself some time on Twitter! Gunn sparked an interesting conversation about time travel movies, and people have had a lot to say. Undoubtedly, time travel is one of the most interesting and fun concepts to toy with in movies, shows, and franchises. The one franchise which has often held a monopoly over this concept has been ‘Back to the Future’.
While ‘Back to the Future’ continues to remain legendary and an important stepping stone in the time travel genre, there are several other movies that can match up to it. Gunn wants to know from his followers which their favorite time travel movie is, and the only wrong answer would be ‘Back to the Future’.
‘Give me an awesome time travel movie that is not Back to the Future’
If you were wondering why ‘Back to the Future’ was trending, you can thank Gunn for it. Gunn revealed that his favorite or what he considers an "awesome" time travel movie is ‘Groundhog Day’. He even adds a gif from the movie with his tweet and sparks a conversation that continues to several thousand tweets as everyone chimed in with their favorite time travel movie.
Gunn has declared ‘Groundhog Day’ as his pick, but does the rest of the internet agree? By the looks of it, everyone is divided given the range of choices, but one underdog movie shines through all the responses!

‘Somewhere in Time’ wears the crown
Shockingly enough, the most common answer that surfaced in response to Gunn’s tweet was ‘Somewhere in Time’ which was released in 1980. This movie was the perfect mix of science-fiction and romance and featured a stellar cast, which included Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, Christopher Plummer, and Richard Matheson amongst others.
The reason ‘Somewhere in Time’ stands out from the crowd is because of its uniqueness despite being made in the early 80s. The story revolves around Richard Collier (Reeve) who finds out that time travel can be achieved through hypnosis. It takes obsession and love for Richard to time travel and be with the woman he is destined to end up with.
While there are several other time travel movies that have been talked about after James Gunn’s tweet, ‘Somewhere in Time’ emerged as the winner. If you’re curious about ‘Somewhere in Time’, you can rent the movie on Amazon Prime Video for $3.79, and on Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, and YouTube for $3.99. You can also stream it for free on Tubi.
