Ivanka Trump can't seem to catch a break. Twitter is furious after US President Donald Trump's daughter praised close US allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for their attempts to advance women's rights, especially since women's rights activists have been thrown in prison and are facing suspicious national security charges.

Ivanka, Trump's daughter, congratulated the Emirati leaders while speaking at a two-day conference called Global Women's Forum in Dubai and said that they had removed "barriers to women joining the workforce and developing a national strategy that recognizes that women are central to sustainable growth." She also congratulated Bahrain and Jordan as well as Morroco and Tunisia for their "achievements and advancements".

Saudi Arabia made recent changes in its law that now allow women to travel abroad and obtain a passport without the permission of a male relative. In 2018, a ban on women driving cars was lifted. The changes are part of their efforts to transform the Saudi economy, to attract greater foreign investment and ease international criticism. Ivanka also lauded Bahrain for introducing a legislation against discrimination in the workplace, Jordan for eliminating legal restrictions on women’s ability to work at night, Morocco for increasing women’s land rights and Tunisia for its introduction of laws to combat domestic violence.

One Twitter user tweeted in frustration as she shared the views on Twitter. "How about empowering those mothers whose children have been ripped away from them at the border?"  Many also mocked her for speaking about women's rights when her father Trump was accused of sexual harassment by dozens of women. "Third Reich Barbie often confuses terms that sound alike such as 'equality' and 'equity'. She thinks the Saudis have increased equity between shareholders of both genders hence her praise,"  said another.

A third one tweeted, "A women's forum in Saudi is like having a human rights forum in China....." Another person slammed her for defending nations that have had "gross human and women's rights records".

"How much are the Saudis paying you? Asking for a friend..."  tweeted one, as another said, "Ivanka supports laws that deny women access to healthcare and family planning services. She praises Saudi Arabia where women's’ rights activists are imprisoned. Ivanka is a fraud."

Walid al-Hathloul, the brother of one of the best-known activists, Loujain al-Hathloul had told BBC earlier that Hathloul had been tortured and her case shrouded in secrecy. The scrutiny of human rights in the kingdom has intensified since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The case of Princess Haya bint al-Hussein, wife of Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum also garnered worldwide attention after she fled the country and refused to go back.
