Is Tom Holland leaving Hollywood? Spiderman star says 'the business really scares me' as he recounts alcohol problem
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tom Holland has candidly admitted that the entertainment industry is "not for him" despite his unwavering passion for filmmaking. In fact, the 27-year-old star, known for his role in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' went into specifics about his concerns regarding a potential struggle with "alcohol addiction".
In a candid interview on Jay Shetty's 'On Purpose' podcast, the British actor said, "Look, I really am a massive fan of making movies but I really do not like Hollywood, it is not for me," Holland shared on Sunday, July 9. "The business really scares me. I understand that I'm a part of that business, and I enjoy my kind of interactions with it."
Why does Tom Holland want to leave Hollywood?
Holland continued, “But that said, I am always looking for ways to kind of remove myself from it, to kind of just live as normal a life as possible. Today, doing this [podcast] is a very rare thing for me to do,” he added, noting that Shetty’s platform felt like a “safe space” for him to be vulnerable. The actor expressed concern about losing himself in the entertainment industry, citing examples of friends who have succumbed to its pressures.
"I definitely think it has been an ongoing thought, which is don't lose yourself," Holland said. "I've seen so many people come before me and lose themselves, and I've had friends that I've grown up with that aren't friends of mine anymore because they've lost themselves to this business. I just am really, really keen to focus on what makes me happy, which is my family, it’s my friends. It’s my carpentry, my golf, the charity that my mom runs,” he went on. "Like, that is the stuff that makes me really happy, and that’s the stuff that I should protect.”
'Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing!'
During the interview, Holland also addressed his struggles with alcohol addiction. He revealed that he realized he was "definitely addicted to alcohol" while attempting to commit to a month of abstinence during "Dry January." However, the actor found himself constantly thinking about having a drink, which alarmed him. "I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock... And it just really scared me," Holland confessed. “Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing. So I sort of decided to punish myself and say, I’ll do February as well. I’ll do two months off.” Holland said he was “really struggling” after going dry for two months, which led him to fear that he may have “an alcohol problem.”
