Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell, 56, enters hospice care with only 'days to live' after suffering liver failure

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA: Steve Harwell, the former frontman for Smash Mouth has entered hospice care at 56 years old. Harwell, who retired from the band in 2021 is "on his deathbed" and has entered the last stage of liver failure, which was brought on by lifelong struggles with alcohol abuse, as per TMZ. 

Harwell is home and being cared for by his fiance, Robert Hayes, a manager for Smash Mouth, confirmed. 

A source said, "Unfortunately this is the case." "Steve is resting at home and being cared for by his fiance and hospice care."

"We would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time," the source added.

In 2013, the California-born singer was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a combination of diseases that affects the heart. He had also been suffering from Wernicke encephalopathy, which causes several painful symptoms such as difficulty walking, hypothermia, and confusion.

Who is Steve Harwell's wife?

Steve Harwell was married to his loving and supportive wife, Michelle Laroque, who is a French actress, comedian, producer, and screenwriter. They welcomed a son named Presley Scott who unfortunately died of lymphocytic leukemia when he was six months old.

This led to the establishment of The Presley Scott Research Foundation, which is actively run by Laroque herself. Harwell was later engaged to fiance Esther Campbell.

In 2019, Campbell reportedly filed a restraining order against Harwell, claiming he was a 'threatening drunk,' as per TMZ.

Why did Steve Harwell quit 'Smash Mouth'?

Steve Harwell quit his band 'Smash Mouth' in 2021 following a 'chaotic' concert performance on the Big Sip stage. During the show, Harwell slurred his words, gave a Nazi salute on stage, and appeared to threaten the crowd.

A statement then released by Harwell's representative read, "Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues over the last eight years, and during his last performance at the Big Sip stage, he suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation."

Further adding, "As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health."
