Internet split as Selena Gomez says she LIED about not being affected by body-shaming over lupus diagnosis
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In the 'Dear...' documentary series, which Apple TV+ released on Thursday, Selena Gomez discusses the impact of bullying online comments. The singer claims that she lied when she said she wasn't affected by the body shamers, but in truth, she would be "crying her eyes out" in her room.
Gomez claimed that she "lied" when she said that she was unaffected by negative remarks from body shamers. "I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter. I’m not accepting what you’re saying,'" the 30-year-old actress said on the Apple TV+ documentary, reports Page Six.

'I don’t think that anybody deserves less'
Gomez, 30, who has a history of confronting body shamers, said that despite presenting herself as invincible to online harassment, she would still be "crying" her "eyes out" because "no one deserves to hear those things." "I was posting these things saying it doesn’t bother me because I didn’t want it to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing," Gomez continued. "Getting shamed for what they look like, who they are, who they love, I just think it’s so unfair. I don’t think that anybody deserves less than. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus," she declared.
Gomez taking on body shamers
Despite the unpleasant side effects of her lupus in 2014, the 'Only Murders in the Building' star revealed that people online "couldn't wait" to find an excuse to criticize her. During a TikTok live, the 30-year-old artist addressed criticism of her appearance and disclosed that her lupus medication had caused extreme weight fluctuations. Gomez stated that she is not and "never will be" a model and advised critics to "go away" if they didn't like it.
Regarding her appearance at the 2023 Golden Globes, Gomez responded to body shamers earlier this year. Along with her 9-year-old sister, Gracie, the Disney Channel alum wore a strapless Valentino gown at the time. At the award show, Gomez said in an Instagram live video, "I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays. But we don’t care," bursting into laughter with her sister, as per Page Six.
In April 2022, the founder of 'Rare Beauty' had a similar encounter and responded to her body-shaming naysayers by claiming that she didn't value being "skinny" over enjoying her favorite foods because "people bitch about [her weight] anyway." She said, "Bitch, I am perfect the way I am."
Moreover, Gomez revealed last month that she has weight fluctuations when taking her lupus medicine. "When I’m taking it, I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight," she revealed in a TikTok video. Gomez has previously taken breaks from social media to distance herself from the negative comments.
'Stay strong Selena'
Internet divides over Gomez's recent discussion on the 'Dear...' documentary series with naysayers continuing with their negative remarks and supporters backing up the Disney alum. "Stay strong Selena,we love you," said one supporter. Another one typed, "I love you selena , Be strong , Don't mind what other people say or think of you. You are so precious and real." One more social media user supported Gomez commenting, "I feel like.. if they shame you... shame them back? Idk. Thats always been the automatic response. Who cares if it's the right thing? They like talking about flaws... then tell em!" "Love you queen," exclaimed another.

However, there's an army of naysayers who keep criticizing Gomez for opening up claiming her to be a "victim." One such user commented, "I wish y’all can wake up to this girl’s fake victim mentality. She wants to use that married couple for publicity and I’m glad they are not addressing her." "Always a victim ultra level of " my dog stepped on a beeeeee," typed another. "Another day for us to pity her over something we didn’t do. We’re sorry Selena, leave us alone Imagine how tired we are," commented another. One user said, "Another pity party seeking statement."
