NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: David Letterman made an emotional return to 'The Late Show.' The legendary host, who was at the helm for decades before retiring in 2015, shared the difficulty of leaving his job.

“I miss everything. Mostly it’s fun," he told his successor Stephen Colbert when asked what he missed the most.

Letterman continued, “Very few things in life provide one the opportunity. And I can't speak for you or to you on this topic, but for me, if you muck one up, 24 hours later you get to try again, And that's a pretty good device."

The 76-year-old also talked about how there was always this itch to return. "Then when you do something you're really proud of, you think, 'My God, let's do that again!," he said.

One of the highlights of the appearance was when Colbert brought out a selfie he took of himself as a guest with Letterman in the hosting chair around 2014 and asked the former talk show host if they could recreate it.

The two shared a candid moment on Monday, November 20, when they decided to recreate a moment from 2014. When Stephen was guest and David the show’s host, the 59-year-old took a selfie with him.

“This is great because I was going to ask you if I could have my picture taken at the desk,” Letterman said, adding “Do you mind?" — Colbert responded, “Let’s do it.”

Letterman funny as hell

Once Colbert returned to the host chair, he asked Letterman, “What do you think of my supplies? Is that anything like what you had over there, down there?”

“What? All this weed?” Letterman said jokingly, prompting laughter from the host and his audience. "By the way, in my day, I never would've let this happen,” Letterman added. “I'm sorry. Thank you.”

Earlier Colbert addressed Letterman's statement that the late-night chair is a "strange job that a lot of people don’t understand" at other points in the conversation, as per People.

"I’m lucky enough to have my friend John Stewart to talk about this weird job with and my friends in Strike Force Five," he said.

"Was there anybody for you, when you were in the chair, that you were you could do that with? Somebody you could call and just talk about it. Could you call Johnny [Carson]?" Colbert enquired.

In response, Letterman said he was "orphaned in the talk show world," though he had "great respect for these guys."
