How the 'You Can't Cancel America' tour hoax and Oliver Anthony stardom captured a divided nation
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Amid the ever-growing debates abounding the politics of the nation, a little hoax regarding Oliver Anthony managed to garner considerable attention.
As the US Presidential Election is on the cards in just a little more than a year, politics is a hotly debated subject with cancel culture being rampant over the internet.
Recently, it was rumored that the overnight musical sensation Oliver Anthony was teaming up with country music maestros Kid Rock and Jason Aldean for a sensational tour named ‘You Can’t Cancel America’.
Is the tour ‘You Can’t Cancel America’ happening?
Unfortunately, the entire idea of the tour is a hoax, generated from a satire (or fake news) website.
A website called SpaceXMania.com published an article on September 2 with the headline "Breaking: Oliver Anthony To Join Kid Rock And Jason Aldean For 'You Can't Cancel America' Tour,” which caused considerable ripples among music lovers.
The site described the concert to be “one part musical extravaganza and three parts comedic opera,” which “has left fans wondering what they can expect from this improbable trio.”
Four days later, the website published another article titled, "Jason, Kid Rock, and Oliver Anthony's 'You Can't Cancel America' Tour Achieves Record-Breaking Ticket Sales."
However, despite the claims, the fans could not find the links to any ticket for the show as it was completely a hoax.
The website describes itself as a website specializing in “satirical articles,” as it writes in the ‘About Us’ section, “Our website has a strong presence on social media, where we engage with our readers, share breaking news, and showcase our latest satirical articles.”
Furthermore, they added in the section, “Our satirical articles provide a fresh and entertaining take on the latest space news, while our analysis delves deep into the technical, financial, and political aspects of space travel.”
In fact, they also added the tag of a ‘Satire’ to the articles claiming Oliver Anthony joining with Kid Rock and Jason Aldean.
The news about Oliver Anthony, whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford, and the "You Can't Cancel America" tour appeared to have begun in an article on Latherland.com
Per the website titled Snopes, the false news of their collaboration was first perpetrated through another satire website called Latherland.com, which is a subsidiary of ‘America's Last Line of Defense’ network.
In an article titled "Kid Rock And Jason Aldean's You Can't Cancel America Tour Is Happening,” the site first propagated the rumor.
Recently, another website named Esspots, which is a subsidiary of SpaceXMania.com and claims to specialize in Satire and Parody News, also shared the same news.
Thus, it can be concluded safely, that the tour is not happening as of yet now.
Why did the rumored tour unify the nation?
Had the tour happened with Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, and Oliver Anthony sharing the stage, it would have been a remarkable feat considering the diversity in the musicians’ political standings.
While Jason Aldean and Kid Rock are famous conservatives. Oliver Anthony is far from being a right-wing.
Aldean has been described as a staunch Trump supporter by The Atlantic. Similarly, Kid Rock has been described as a “Republican rocker” by Rolling Stone.
On the other hand, Oliver Anthony has more kept to the middle ground in terms of politics.
The ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ singer recently made his political ideology clear in a 10-minute-long video on YouTube on August 25, where he clarified the issue regarding the Conservatives identifying with him.
He was found mourning, “It’s aggravating seeing people on conservative news try to identify with me, like I’m one of them.”
He added, “It’s aggravating seeing certain musicians and politicians act like we’re buddies and act like we’re fighting the same struggle, like we’re trying to present the same message.”
Anthony continued, “It was funny seeing my song at the presidential debate, because I wrote that song about those people, you know. So for them to have to sit there and listen to that, that cracks me up. It was funny seeing the response to it.”
However, he clarified, “That song has nothing to do with Joe Biden — it’s a lot bigger than Joe Biden. That song is written about the people on that stage — and a lot more, too. Not just them, but definitely them.”
He also added his breakthrough song is about people and not politics, “It’s hard to get a message out about your political ideology or your belief about the world in three minutes and change. I hate to see that song being weaponized,” per Variety.
