Mark Lanegan, the main vocalist of 'Screaming Trees', a hard rock and grunge band from the 1990s, has passed away at the age of 57. On Tuesday, February 22, his death was revealed on his Twitter profile. The message on his Twitter reads, “our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland.  A beloved singer, songwriter, author, and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley.  No other information is available at this time. We ask Please respect the family's privacy.”

However, the cause of death is still unknown. The singer's unexpected death comes only months after he opened up about his months-long fight with Covid-19, which resulted in hallucinatory visions and a medically induced coma. Lanegan wrote about his traumatic March 2021 struggle with coronavirus in his book, 'Devil In A Coma', which was released last year. He explained in his book, “every attempted breath was a battle, no matter how hard I tried to take a natural one. Though I refused to go to the hospital, my wife finally called an ambulance behind my back and I was wheeled out of my yard on a gurney.”

Following his Covid struggle, Lanegan revealed that he encountered “bizarre dreams, strange visions, shadowy darkness, untrustworthy memories, and recurring hallucinations, all hallmarks of near-death experiences”. He went on to say, “I eventually ended up in intensive care, unable to draw oxygen, and was diagnosed with some exotic new strain of the coronavirus for which there was no cure, of course. I was put into a medically induced coma, none of which I remembered.”

Many celebrities from the music and entertainment world have paid respect to Lanegan, including 'Lord of the Ring' star Elijah Wood, who responded to the news on Twitter saying, "Aww man, Mark Lanegan." Tim Burgess of the 'Charlatans' tweeted, "oh no. Terrible news that Mark Lanegan has left us. Safe travels man - you'll be missed." Lanegan first gained attention as a member of Seattle grunge pioneers 'The Screaming Trees' but went on to have a successful solo career and work with 'Queens of the Stone Age'. Lanegan was also a member of 'The Gutter Twins' and worked with musicians such as Kurt Cobain of 'Nirvana'.

Rob Delaney, a comedian, and actor, has paid tribute to Lanegan by writing on Twitter by adding a picture of Lanegan’s collection, "I love you, Mark Lanegan. A colossal, spectacular body of work. These are all him? How?" Lanegan was regarded as a "lovely man" who had a "wildlife" by Peter Hook, co-founder of the rock bands ‘Joy Division’ and ‘New Order’. Hook posted a black-and-white photo to Twitter with the caption, "Mark Lanegan was a lovely man. He led wildlife that some of us could only dream of. He leaves us with fantastic words and music! Thank god that through all of that he will live forever. RIP Mark. Sleep well. Love Hooky. X".
