Nashville, Tennessee: The death of five times Grammy Award winner, June Carter Cash, 20 years ago sent shockwaves to music fans across the globe. June Carter was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve and the complications followed by surgery led to her death at the age of 73.

Hailing from a renowned musical lineage, Carter embarked on her stage journey at the tender age of 10. Over six remarkable decades, she etched her place as a legendary singer and songwriter.

Now, Paramount+ is set to bring her intricate yet inspiring life back into focus with the documentary 'June', slated for premiere on Tuesday, January 16.

June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash were married for 35 years

June Carter was married twice before she found life-long companionship with singer Johnny Cash. Carter and her family had collaborated with Cash professionally for several projects.

In 1968, he proposed to Carter during a live performance at the London Ice House. They tied the knot on March 1 until death tore them apart.

During their marriage, Cash provided support through his numerous illnesses and addictions, concurrently bringing stability into his life. Their union seemed to be perfectly matched.

The couple remarried four months before June Carter's death

Despite facing ongoing medical challenges, Cash's professional strength continued to grow. However, he was dealt a devastating blow with the sudden death of his beloved wife.

In April 2003, June Carter received a diagnosis of a leaky heart valve, leading her to undergo valve replacement surgery. Despite the intervention, her health continued to decline, ultimately resulting in her death on May 15, 2003.

How did Johnny Cash die?

The 'Ring of Fire' fame suffered numerous health challenges. In the 1980s, he underwent surgeries on his knees, heart, and jaw, with the repercussions of drug and alcohol abuse evident throughout his life.

In 1997, a diagnosis of the neurodegenerative Shy–Drager syndrome gave him an estimated 18 months to live, but this was later revised to autonomic neuropathy linked to diabetes. Subsequently, in 1998, severe pneumonia inflicted damage to his lungs.

Despite the loss of June Carter, he immersed himself in work. Tragically, on September 12, 2003, he died of complications arising from diabetes.

Fans speculated that a blend of physical and emotional anguish contributed to his passing, which occurred just four months after his wife's demise.

A documentary on June Carter Cash to premiere on Paramount+

A feature documentary on June Carter Cash is set to debut in the US and Canada on January 16 followed by a day later release in territories including the UK, Australia, Latin America, France, Germany Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.

It is directed by Kristen Vaurio and will explore the life and career of June Carter Cash.
