UVALDE, TEXAS: A heartbreaking video shows terrified parents rushing towards Robb Elementary School in Uvalde as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos went on a killing spree that claimed 19 students along with one teacher and a staff member. The video, first reportedly posted on Snapchat, showed people frightfully running towards the school as the tragedy unfolded. The caption of the clip said, “Kids are running out of the classrooms.”

The footage has emerged amid more details about the victims. The teacher who lost her life in the Tuesday, May 24, horror was 44-year-old Eva Mireles, who used to teach fourth-graders.

The educator’s aunt issued a statement remembering her which read: “I'm furious that these shootings continue. These children are innocent. Rifles should not be easily available to all. This is my hometown, a small community of less than 20,000. I never imagined this would happen to especially loved ones ... All we can do is pray hard for our country, state, schools, and especially the families of all.”

A person claiming Mireles was their daughter’s teacher also remembered her, tweeting: “My daughter’s beautiful teacher was the teacher who was killed in Uvalde, TX. Eva (Ms Mireles) taught Gabby in elementary school. She was a beautiful person & dedicated teacher. She believed in Gabby & went above & beyond to teach her as you can see below. There are no words.”

Governor Greg Abbott first named Salvador Ramos as responsible for the shooting that took several lives and created havoc among the community. It has been said that the North Dakota-born first fatally shot his grandmother before arriving at the school. Governor Abbott said, “There are families that are in mourning right now. And the state of Texas is in mourning with them.”

According to reports, the Uvalde massacre was the deadliest after the 2018 Parkland shooting that took the lives of 14 high school children and three staff. In 2012, another elementary school – Sandy Hook Elementary School – witnessed a similar massacre with 20 children and six school workers killed.

After the tragedy, President Joe Biden addressed the nation, saying, “The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy two assault weapons is just wrong. As a nation, we have to ask: When in God's name will we stand up to the gun lobby? Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep on letting this happen? Where in God's name is our backbone?”

He also noted: “I had hoped, when I became president, I would not have to do this. Again. Another massacre. Uvalde, Texas. An elementary school. Beautiful innocent, second, third, fourth graders. And how many scores of little children who witnessed what happened - see their friends die as if they're on a battlefield, for God's sake?”

Biden added: “Parents will never be the same. To lose a child, it's like having a piece of your soul ripped away. There's a hollowness in your chest you feel like you're being sucked into it. And never going to be able to get out. Suffocating. And it's never quite the same. It's the feeling shared by the siblings and the grandparents and the family members and the community that's left behind. So tonight, I asked the nation to pray for them. Give the parents and siblings the strength in the darkness they feel right now.”

Former president Barack Obama also expressed his sorrow as well as frustration over the horrendous incident by tweeting, “Nearly ten years after Sandy Hook—and ten days after Buffalo—our country is paralyzed, not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies. It’s long past time for action, any kind of action. And it’s another tragedy—a quieter but no less tragic one—for families to wait another day. May God bless the memory of the victims, and in the words of Scripture, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds.”
