Harry suffers from second son complex and Diana bigged up his ego, says Lady Campbell: ‘He can't have it all’

Royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell has claimed that Prince Harry is suffering from “a second son complex” after living in the shadow of his elder brother, Prince William. She also said that the 35-year-old is "painfully troubled and unhinged by being the second son".

Campbell was a close friend of Lady Diana and has written six books on the Royal Family, which includes two biographies of the late princess also. On Sunday, August 2, the socialite spoke to The Sun regarding an upcoming bombshell book, ‘Finding Freedom’, which details the life of the Sussexes. “Harry suffers from a second son complex. He’s not counting his blessings at all. I’ve studied history, and he has the biggest chip on his shoulder of any member of the Royal Family in the past few centuries,” Lady C said.

“He has been so painfully troubled and unhinged by being the second son. Diana would big up his ego when he was younger. I remember thinking he needs to remember he can’t have it all. Barring a terrible disaster, he won’t be the next king.”

Campbell became close to Diana when their children used to go to the same polo club. The 70-year-old said: “Diana would always say to me that William was like his father. She would jokingly say, ‘Harry is an airhead like me’. She used to spoil Harry rotten while William was treated normally. Harry got used to having what he wanted, it seemed to me, which he has taken into his adult life. William always had more gravitas but Harry has a lot of Diana in him.

“Harry’s always been quite impulsive, as he’s proven with Meghan. He was quite wild as a child — warm-hearted but wild. He was always quick-tempered. In his late teens he almost got involved in a fight with a man (a paparazzi) his father’s age during a night out. He had to be bundled home by his security.”

The writer, however, also admitted that Diana is partly responsible for Harry and Meghan’s current situation. She explained, “Diana would encourage Harry to be more rebellious. She used to tell both boys, ‘I don’t care what you do as long as I don’t find out’. It wasn’t the soundest advice growing up. But Diana, despite being her own person, respected the Crown and its history. She was not entitled.”

During the conversation, Campbell said the former ‘Suits’ actress is very similar to Lady Macbeth, William Shakespeare’s one of the most famous and frightening female characters who brought about the downfall of her husband. “Meghan’s influence is very reminiscent of Lady Macbeth. It’s so sad because I remember Harry growing up and he was great with my kids. To gain a toehold over Harry she appears to have played to his weaknesses, just as Katherine has played to William’s strengths,” she added.

Continuing further, Lady C stated: “Meghan shares a lot of Harry’s weaknesses. He is hyper-emotional, over-the-top, rushes where wise people don’t and is extremely self-important. The way she has acted is completely unacceptable in the Royal Family. Even Diana knew how to be a princess and when to toe the line. Meghan appears, to me, very good at talking the talk and not walking the walk. She is leading Harry down a path he will struggle to find his way back from. I fear for them.”

The book, ‘Finding Freedom’, written by Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie has created a lot of havoc in the Royal household even before its release. The biography of Harry and Meghan has reportedly shared intimate details about the family. Though the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have released a joint statement saying they have no direct involvement in the book, Lady C said, “I call the book Funding Freedom and Finding Freebies. I feel they have been so disingenuous. For me, they are insulting the public’s intelligence by saying they had nothing to do with it. It would be career suicide for them to admit they had anything to do with the book. I think it shows that Harry and Meghan don’t play cricket with a straight bat. The book, to me, read like a howl of anger,” she added.
