Harold Reid, the bass singer of the Grammy-winning Statler Brothers, has passed away at the age of 80 following a long battle with kidney failure. In addition to being a part of one of the most influential groups in country and gospel music, Reid was also a comedian.

The Statler Brothers were one of the most beloved American country and gospel vocal groups. The quartet, consisting of lead singer Don Reid, bass singer Harold Reid, baritone Phil Balsley, and tenor and guitarist Lew DeWitt (later replaced by Kimmy Fortune due to DeWitt's failing health), began performing in 1995 and was eventually discovered and mentored by Johnny Cash, singing backup for him from 1964 until 1972. DeWitt passed away in 1990 due to heart and kidney failure.

In a statement posted to the band's website, fellow members have stated, "He is and will always be loved by his family, friends and millions of fans." It continues, "His singing, his songwriting and his comedy made generations happy. He has taken a piece of our hearts with him." Reid's nephew, Debo Reid, said in a separate statement, "He leaves a large and loving family and millions of fans who remember his stage and TV antics with smiles and cherish his music that will live with the ages."

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their grief at losing one of the most decorated country artists. "One thing that sucks about getting older is losing legends," tweeted one fan, adding "Harold had one of the best distinguished Bass voices in the business. My thoughts go to his brother Don, the Reid Family, Phil, and Jimmy over the loss." Another stated simply, "2020 sucks so bad."

One fan shared, "So saddened tonight to hear that Harold Reid, founder of the Statler Brothers, has passed at the age of 80. I grew up on the Statlers…such talented entertainers. Harold was the total package…writer, singer, comedian, business man, family man, and most of all, man of God! RIP."

Many fans have chosen to spend their night listening to their favorite songs from Reid in honor of his passing. One tweeted, "I’m going to stay up way too late tonight and listen to a bunch of Statler Brothers songs. #RIPHaroldReid," and another shared, "Rip #haroldreid from the #statlerbrothers. My favorite song was “more than a name on a wall” ... reminds me of my dad who is also gone."

One fan stated, "Damn this makes me sad....loved these guys. Rest in peace, Harold. I'll be singing "Flowers on the wall" tonight."

Fans also recalled the first time they got to witness the Statler Brothers perform, stating "@CMT just asked yesterday what the first country music concert was that I attended. My answer was the Statler Brothers. Back in the 70’s. This news is so sad. Prayers."

A Statler Brothers tribute account tweeted, "Tonight I’m am saddened. I am at a loss for words. My heart is just broken. Country music’s friend #HaroldReid of the #StatlerBrothers has passed. Please be in prayer for his family and brothers. Blessings," to which one distraught fan responded, "Oh no oh no! This is so heartbreaking for country music for the statlers for his brother and his family. I’m heartbroken! I’ve listened to him since I was a little bitty girl I absolutely love hearing bass singers. Harold was definitely one of the best. My prayers to his family!"
