'Harley Quinn': Poison Ivy and Kite-Man have a beautiful relationship, here's why that's a bad thing

It's rare for a TV show to feature such a healthy, loving relationship, and its inevitable end is going to be that much harder to bear

Spoilers for 'Harley Quinn' Season 2, Episode 4 - 'Thawing Hearts'

It wasn't what anyone expected, but Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) and Kite-Man (Matt Oberg) are relationship goals. They share interests (super villainy counts). They are clearly in love. They're there for each other, and when problems come up in the relationship, they work through it. They even share a costumed color scheme. Forsaking games, drama and soap-opera twists, 'Harley Quinn' has given us a truly wonderful and caring relationship — and that's terrible.

A strong and significant contingent of the Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) fandom knows that she and Poison Ivy have meant to be, and fans of the show have been waiting for that to happen on the show from the very first moment it was announced. While Season 1 held off on Harley diving into a new relationship so soon after her break-up with the Joker (Alan Tudyk), showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumaker have already confirmed that Season 1 will be giving fans the relationship they've been waiting for. While everything thus far has canonically pointed to Harley and Ivy being best friends, 'Thawing Hearts' focuses on romantic love — and highlights the fact that Harley and Ivy will do anything for each other. It's subtle, but it's a start.

Meanwhile, however, Ivy's relationship with Kite-Man is being played completely straight (pun intended). There are no indications that there's anything wrong with their relationship, or that Harley Quinn is going to be coming between them — on the contrary, Harley Quinn is now all-in on the Ivy-Kite-Man relationship. With every episode that goes by that doesn't include a hint of foreshadowing, the relationship gets increasingly uncomfortable because you know it can't last.

The show has put a lot of effort into making the relationship work. Poison Ivy has opened herself up to Kite-Man, and allowed herself a certain vulnerability that's rare to see, and that obviously wasn't easy for her to grow into. Kite-Man's earnestness is one of his most endearing traits. Seeing a healthy, blossoming romantic relationship is such a rare thing, and fans of the show should be able to comfortably root for it without waiting for its inevitable end.

Unless Ivy and Kite-Man have a decidedly more open kind of marriage, their relationship is destined to end. It's necessary, as a Poison Ivy-Harley Quinn relationship is an important thing for the show to feature. The show has more than proven it can write great relationships, and Harley and Ivy's looks like it will be one for the ages. It's just a shame that it's going to come at the cost of breaking poor Kite-Man's heart. As he would undoubtedly put it himself: "Hell...nah."

The next episode of 'Harley Quinn' airs May 1 on DC Universe at 9 am.
