Hailey Bieber has been accused of "cultural appropriation" after posting a TikTok video demonstrating a makeup look she calls "brownie glazed lips" that consists of clear gloss and brown lip liner.

Media outlets and followers on social media quickly gave the 25-year-old model credit for establishing a new beauty trend that infuriated people of color who quickly pointed out that the beauty style has been popular among black, brown, and Latina women since the 1990s. Beauty enthusiasts were incensed by the fashion celebrity's appropriation of the makeup technique and failure to give credit to the original creator of the look as they rushed to social media to lambast the fashion star.

After posting a TikTok video on August 22 in which she explained how to get the look while promoting her skincare product, Rhode Skin, Hailey, the wife of musician Justin Bieber, started the "brownie glazed lips" fad. “The lip combo vibe I’m feeling for fall @rhode skin,” she wrote in the caption. She shared a second video the next day, captioning it, "Ready for all the fall things, including brownie glazed lips," and demonstrating the effects of blending brown lip liner with a clear glossy lip treatment. The name was obviously intended to reference her "glazed donut aesthetic" and the main ideas driving her skin care product.

Women from different cultures started to express their annoyance over the appearance being attributed to Hailey as the model's followers started praising the star for inventing the "new" lip trend for the autumnal season. Many argued that it was incorrect to give it a new name or attribute the trend to Hailey because women with darker skin tones have traditionally preferred the combination of brown lip liner with a clear gloss over the years.

Hailey’s “brown grazed lips” have received a backlash on Twitter as one user stated, “white ppl calling brown lip liner w clear gloss hailey bieber lips or brownie glazed lips… hailey didn’t do shit!! black and hispanic women have done this combo way before.” Another user commented: “the hailey beiber brownie glazed lips trend” YOU MEAN THE SAME LIP COMBO THAT EVERY BROWN GIRL OF ALL VARIETIES OF BROWN HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. One user defended Hailey by saying, “i dont think hailey ever claimd to have invented this brown lip liner + gloss combo, but she did the naming “brown glazed lip” which perfectly describes what that is, which is a brown colored lip liner + a lip balm, Also, her mom is basically brazillian, so… whats wrong?” Describing appropriation, one user wrote, “Ex Hailey Beiber calling lined lips with clear gloss, brown glazed lip trend she came up with BUT it’s something blacks and Hispanics have been doing for decades. THAT is appropriation.” While one user suggested that Hailey is trying to divert the heat: “Hailey talking about Selena or whatever in the podcast is probably so that people would stop talking about her brown glazed lip thing which alot of people got mad over.”
