Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka'oir: A fiery romance that started from jail and grew to become an Internet fan favorite

Rapper Gucci Mane and model Keyshia Ka'oir are expecting their first child together. The couple got married in 2017. The duo shared the good news on social media. with Ka’oir sharing a photo of her sitting on a bathtub and flaunting her baby bump with the caption: “I ain’t athletic but on @gucci1017 D I did gymnastics.” While Mane posted a photo of his wife and captioned it: “My beautiful wife pregnant life is good @KeyshiaKaoir.”

The duo’s love story isn’t a conventional one. In 2008, Mane was charged for violating probation. He had completed only 25 out of 600 community service hours following his 2005 arrest for aggravated assault, according to XXL Mag. He was sentenced to a year in the county jail but was released after six months. He was again back in the Fulton County jail for probation violation and released on May 12, 2010. According to an interview in The Frader, when asked about the beginning of their relationship, Ka’oir said, “In 2010, Gucci was in jail in Fulton County, and I was the XXL “Eye Candy of the Year.” When you’re in jail, you get these magazines with sexy models, so he got the magazine, too. I had already been in Timbaland’s “Say Something” video and Gucci had seen the video. He called [his manager] Amina from jail, and he was like, “Who is Keyshia Ka’oir? I want to meet this girl.” He was like, “I’m getting out soon, I need her for my next video, you have to find her!”

His manager then got in touch with Ka’oir. After the initial apprehension (In The Frader interview, Ka’oir says “I don’t even want to be around rappers. But Gucci kept asking”), eventually she agreed. After the rapper was back from prison, they flew Ka’oir to Atlanta to shoot for the ‘911 Emergency’ video.  The Frader quotes her saying, “That’s the day we met. He was in love with me on sight.”

In the same interview, she said, “Gucci has always meant a lot to me. A lot of times, I feel like he’s misunderstood. I know that I’m one of the few people that really understands him. I was his biggest support system, and no matter what he goes through I’m going to be there for him. Why would I turn my back on him now?”

According to a report by People magazine, Mane had previously admitted that he had put his then-girlfriend through difficult situations during his time in jail. According to the report, recalling in his 2017 memoir, ‘The Autobiography of Gucci Mane’, the rapper had apparently screamed at her two weeks after he’d been arrested and put in an isolation cell in 2013, “Why the f**k haven’t you come down here and bonded me out yet?”

However, last year  Mane was criticized for an Instagram post. The post featured a wedding photo of the couple with the words:  “Everyone want this, but what y’all forget was she was with wild Gucci, cheating Gucci, in jail Gucci, publicity with other women Gucci. This is Gucci after therapy/rehabilitation. This is a street man groomed in his 30’s after he’s been at his lowest point. Point is, this is a rider who knew what she signed up for! You b***hes is with the next — after couples fight …” and the caption read, “I love my wife she stayed down!” The People magazine report states that he drew flak for praising wife Ka’oir and trying to glorify his wrongdoings.

In The Frader interview, Ka’oir further states, “Him being locked up over the years was hard at times, especially around birthdays and Valentine’s Day and Christmas. Those days were a bit down for me. But I knew that he was going through more than I was, so I had to be strong for him. At the end of the day, he’s a human being. Even though I’m a woman, I never broke down. I never cried to him on the phone.”

As reported by People, the rapper had proposed Ka’oir in 2016 during an Atlanta Hawks game the NBA shared the sweet moment on Twitter. In the video, Mane and Ka’oir can be seen on the “Kiss Cam” before the rapper presented a surprised Ka’oir with a ring.  According to a People magazine report, the couple wed at the Four Seasons in Miami in 2017, in a ceremony which had cost them around $1.7 million.
