LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around for a long time now, and lately, fans have been disappointed with how things are shaping up. Gone are the days when Iron Man or Captain America could save an entire franchise. However, if there is one movie in Phase Five of the MCU that gives hope to the existing fans, it is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. In the comics, the Guardians have been one of the least-loved groups, especially since they had to compete for the love of fans against the Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four. However, MCU changed their fate.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ has a lot riding on it, especially since this upcoming movie will be the conclusion of the trilogy by James Gunn. Fans aren’t ready to let go of these characters just yet, and chances are some of them might appear in other MCU movies, but not all of them. The movies have taken a page out of the comics, ie, they are going darker! ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ will most likely have a major character death and fans aren’t thrilled about it.

'It was really emotional': Chris Pratt opens up on shooting 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3'

Who will make it to the end?

On one hand, anyone could die in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’. However, if you’re a hardcore Marvel fan and have stuck around despite the unflattering Phase 4 and a shockingly bad start to Phase 5 with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, then chances are you have your theories and predictions. Marvel Studios have made it their mission to have fans go through emotional turmoil in the recent phases of the MCU, but it’s part of the package! This leads us to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ and which of the character might not make it to the end of the movie, and the rest of Phases 5 and 6.

We can rule out Star-Lord because let’s face it, Pratt will at least make an appearance in future movies, and with Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth taking a step back, Pratt might be the Chris holding down the fort. Gamora has already been through being dead and alive, and James Gunn won’t put his fans through that kind of whiplash again. Groot is a fan favorite, and although he is getting older, our best guess is that he is going to stick around. Maybe, he will get Bucky Barnes’ arm in ‘Thunderbolts’.

A lot of fan theories have pointed at Rocket dying in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ and while the trailers and poster might suggest that too, it seems a little too on the nose for Marvel. Rocket feels like a deflection from the character who might actually die, and that could be Mantis.

Mantis and Star-Lord’s connection might be her doom

This has been hinted at before but in ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’, it was properly confirmed that Mantis and Star-Lord are related and that she is his half-sister. Star-Lord is set to have a tragic end in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’, which clearly points toward a family member dying, with that family member being Mantis.

The holiday special largely focused on Mantis trying to make Christmas special for her brother, and that’s just Marvel’s way of tugging on everyone’s hearts strings, making her imminent end a lot more emotional. This would also explain the large screen time she receives in the special.

In a discussion on Reddit, a fan wrote, “Mantis death, that’s why they revealed her to be his half-sister, so Gunn can kick you right in the sack.” Looks like a lot of fans agree that Mantis will be the one dying, but the discourse continues and will do until ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ actually releases.

You can watch ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ in theatres on May 5, 2023.
