BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND: A father-of-three from Australia, who was struck by lightning while he tried to seek shelter during a golf game, died in hospital on Thursday, March 30. Dirk Kotze, 56, died 19 days after being hospitalized for suffering a cardiac arrest brought on by the strike.

He was reportedly playing golf at Brendale in Brisbane's north at the time of the incident when other golfers rushed to his aid. 'Larger than life personality'

Honoring Kotze, Swart said that he would be remembered for his "larger-than-life personality." A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay medical bills and help with Kotze's daughter's education. Recounting the tragic incident, his family wrote: "The trauma sustained by both the lightning strike and subsequent cardiac arrest was too significant for his body to recover. His family takes great comfort in knowing he is now at peace and sustained by his great faith in God with the knowledge of his final destination."

Speaking of the beloved father, the family wrote: "His faith in God, love for people and for being the epitome of a 'shirt off the back' kind of man defined him. There was no one in need he wouldn't put his own life on hold to help out. His life has impacted many and he won't soon be forgotten."

State Emergency Service alerted residents of the thunderstorm

Before Kotze's death, people residing near southeast Queensland were alerted to avoid unnecessary travel due to lightning and flash flooding risks as several thunderstorms were experienced in the area, as per Mirror. The State Emergency Services warned that violent winds and large hailstones were possible and advised residents to move their cars under shelter or away from trees. Residents were also asked to unplug computers and appliances, avoid using their phones and stay indoors away from windows.
