QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY: An NYC councilwoman who supports defunding the police was slammed recently by a woman who survived a brutal subway attack after the woke lawmaker claimed such assaults were only "one in a million". Elizabeth Gomes, 33, blasted Tiffany Caban, a Democrat who represents Queens, after she posted a tweet saying, "Subway violence is a one in a million event."
"As a believer in a violence-free NYC, I still think that's one too many, but let's not let fear-mongering politicians and corporate media outlets scare us into thinking we have a dangerous, scary public transit system," Caban added.

Gomes, a mother of five, was attacked in a Queens subway by Waheed Foster, who was eventually arrested and charged with attempted murder. At the time of the attack on Gomes, he was out on parole for beating his grandmother to death. Foster's release and the subsequent attack on Gomes raised questions on New York's soft-touch laws yet again.
Caban represents Queen's 22nd district. Along with the tweet, she posted a link to a graph she claimed proved her point. However, compared to 2021, transit assaults are up nine percent so far this month across the city. According to official statistics, attacks have risen 43.3 percent so far in 2022 as compared to the prior year, the Daily Mail reported. At present, the number sits at 1,670 for the year to date, compared to 1,165 for the same period of 2021, which is a far lower figure.

After Caban's tweet, Gomes told New York Post, "The subway system is dangerous and for her to post something like that — it seems to me that she doesn’t ride the subway or have anyone to ride it. She doesn’t really understand what it is."
"It’s just getting worse and worse," she said, adding, "People are afraid. People are getting robbed. People are getting shot. People are getting molested." Gomes, railing against Caban's call to defund the police said, "We need protection. That’s what we’re looking for. That's what the people are looking for."

After Gomes was violently attacked, the NYPD posted the news and video of the incident. It soon became viral on social media. Caban's tweet came days later. However, she wrote nothing about the attack on Gomes or Foster's arrest. It is unclear if she was referring to the attack on Gomes. A Queens jury recently indicted Foster on attempted murder and assault charges.
