Hollywood star George Clooney recently came to his royal friend Meghan Markle's defense to say that she is being pursued and vilified. The actor said that 'history is repeating itself' as the pregnant royal is being hounded the same way Princess Diana was before her death.

Clooney was promoting his upcoming Hulu series 'Catch-22' when he publicly slammed the way the pregnant Duchess of Sussex has been treated ever since she joined the royal family and even compared her plight to that of late Princess Diana. “They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified,” Clooney told reporters, according to People Magazine.

“She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was. We’ve seen how that ends,” Clooney added, referring to the car accident that took Princess Diana's life in 1997 when she was reportedly being chased by paparazzi.

On a lighter note, the actor also joked that he would be becoming a godparent to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's newborn. Clooney, who attended the royal wedding in May last year with his wife Amal, said, “Oh, yes, I’ll be a godfather of the royals apparently,” before clarifying that he was joking with an emphatic, “No. I’m a father of twins, I have enough shit to deal with — literally!”

However, Clooney wasn't the only friend Meghan had standing up for her. According to People, five women who form an essential part of Meghan’s inner circle have decided to “stand up against the global bullying we are seeing and speak the truth about our friend,” in the words of one of the Duchess' longtime friend and former costar.

“Meg has silently sat back and endured the lies and untruths,” her former costar said last week. "With Meghan and Harry expecting their first child this spring, we worry about what this is doing to her and the baby,” the costar added.

“It’s wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they’re pregnant.” The friend added that the pregnant Duchess has tried hard to stay true to herself despite all the major changes that she has gone through ever since entering the royal family.

A friend from LA even recalled visiting Kensington Palace’s Nottingham cottage, and later shared, “We had a couple of days together recently. Her husband was out of town on work. In the room she made up for me, there was a candle lit by the bed, slippers and a robe. We were the only two in the house. It was our time."

"She made the most lovely meals. She made tea every day. It was raining and muddy outside, so the dogs got all dirty, and she’s wiping them off with towels. How much she loves her animals, how much she loves her friends, how much she loves feeding you, taking care of you — none of that has changed,” the friend shared.

“When you see her at walkabouts, when she crouches down to talk to the kids, and genuinely has real conversations with people, that’s Meg,” said her former costar. “That’s how she crouches down with our kids at home. That’s how she plays with them. That’s how she engages with people and how she always has.”

Meghan's close friends have come to her defense after the Duchess' estranged half-sister, Samantha Markle, lashed out at her and claimed that Meghan would only care about her if she had $600 million. (Source: Getty Images)

Meghan's close friends have come to her defense after the Duchess' estranged half-sister Samantha Markle lashed out at her and claimed that Meghan would only care about her if she was rich and had $600 million. Samantha took to Twitter to express her distaste after a letter which Meghan had sent to their father Thomas Markle went public.

The letter from Meghan read, "I pleaded with you to stop reading the tabloids. On a daily basis you fixated and clicked on the lies they were writing about me, especially those manufactured by your other daughter, who I barely know."

Just hours after the letter was released, Samantha took to ranting about Meghan on her Twitter account calling her half-sister a "narcissist." Samantha wrote, "Some narcissists (sic) were 'only children', others wish they were."
