GOODLETTSVILLE, TENNESSEE: Garth Brooks is talking openly about his marriage and admits he wasn't the perfect husband. The country singer said he felt he needed to make some adjustments as he considered his connection with his family in a recent interview. He said, "I sucked at being a husband, I was horrible at it. I was horrible at being a dad. I had to get my s--t together." During this phase of his life, he was married to Sandy Mahl.

Despite spending years in the spotlight, the 61-year-old said that early in his career, he wasn't garnering favorable press. He claimed that if social media had been around then, he would have found it difficult to maintain his public profile, as per reports.

'I'd have never survived that if there had been social media'

Brooks recalled, "I was on the front page of the USA Today for being a bad husband and man," adding, "I'd have never survived that if there had been social media, ever." The singer-songwriter revealed the formula for the enduring union with Trisha Yearwood, 58, to whom he has been married for over 20 years. He remarked, "… I will tell you this, the person you're with [does make] a huge difference in your life," as reported by Fox News.

Yearwood is a "bonus mom" to Brooks' three children — Taylor, August, and Allie — from his previous marriage to Sandy Mahl. The country music superstars have been married since 2005.  Before they were officially dating, Yearwood admitted that she and Brooks had been "flirting pretty hard" through text.

'You can see why I'm in love with her'

The singer of 'She's in Love With the Boy' said, "It's usually a first date, you know? It just is what it is. When questioned about the longevity of their marriage, Brooks lauded his wife. "Come on, you can see why I'm in love with her," he said at one point in time to E! News.

According to Brooks, who told Billboard that he wouldn't quit listening to country music just because of 'cancel culture' since music and media change over time. He explained, "Just because … all the sudden The Chicks were canceled, don't make the mistake of thinking their music wasn't any good. Their music was fantastic." He added, "My thing is, I want to hear the new stuff from Luke Combs, followed by the new song from The Chicks, followed by Lainey Wilson," as reported by Wideopen Country.

The singer of 'Friends in Low Places' began his residency in Las Vegas last month in May. Additionally, Brooks made a suggestion that he could be working on new material for Chris Gaines, his alter ego who put out an alternative rock greatest hits CD in 1999.

Additionally, Brooks and Yearwood will release a duet record for the public. In addition to pursuing his musical career, Brooks is launching a new bar in Nashville, Tennessee. Construction on the Friends In Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk is presently ongoing.
