Word puzzle game Wordle has only grown in popularity with each passing day. Everywhere you look, you'll find users playing the game and trying to figure out the right word. Wordle offers its players six attempts to guess a different five-letter word every day. The longer the number of consecutive days a player correctly guesses the right word, the longer the streak. For the dedicated Wordle users, streaks are no small thing.

When a user guesses a word and presses enter, the white tiles switch and the player sees either the yellow, green, or grey tile surrounding the words. The yellow tile means the letter is there in the word, but at a different place. The green tile means that the letter is in the right spot, and the grey tile means the alphabet is not in the word of the day. Wordle started rising in popularity last year, and social media continues to be flooded with it.

Who created Wordle? Latest word game to sweep through Internet was born out of love

Wordle's rise to popularity led to the game being acquired by the New York Times in February 2022, for an undisclosed price in the low seven figures. In his statement, Josh Wardle, who is a Brooklyn-based software engineer and the developer of the puzzle game, said, "I am incredibly pleased to announce that I've reached an agreement with The New York Times for them to take over running Wordle going forward. If you've followed along with the story of Wordle, you'll know that NYT games play a big part in its origins and so this step feels very natural to me I've long admired the NYT's approach to their games and the respect with which they treat their players. Their values are aligned with mine on these matters and I'm thrilled that they will be stewards of the game moving forward."

Wardle had developed Wordle as a puzzle to play with his partner during the pandemic but later decided to launch it for the world to play. The software developer said, "Since launching Wordle, I've been in awe of the response from everyone that has played. The game has gotten bigger than I ever imagined, which I suppose isn't that much of a feat given I made the game for an audience of 1. It has been incredible to watch a game bring so much joy to so many, and I feel so grateful for the personal stories some of you have shared with me from Wordle uniting distant family members to provoking friendly rivalries to supporting medical recoveries."

Word of the Day: SPOILER ALERT

As for the word of the day, Game 270, here we go. March 16's Word of the Day is CATER. Google defines 'cater' as the act of providing people with food and drink at a social event or other gatherings. We hope this helps if you're not able to guess the word right and are afraid of losing your streak.
