'House of the Dragon' finally made its triumphant return after two years. The premiere episode, titled 'Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood,' featured the highly anticipated 'Battle of the Gullet.' As per George R.R. Martin's 'The Dance of the Dragons,' this battle had severe consequences for the civil war between Team Green and Team Black. Rhaenyra especially was driven mad by the losses she suffered in the battle. Though Team Black gathered a strategic win, as they retained the Velaryon fleet and continued to control the east coasts of Westeros, the personnel they lost in the battle were a huge emotional cost for Rhaenyra to bear. Also, the Dragonstone folks, who were fiercely loyal to Rhaenyra, started resenting her due to the losses in this war.  Lord Corlys Velaryon also considered the battle a loss because of the devastating blows his fleet took as well as the people who were sacrificed. Greens also couldn't escape harm, as one of their strongest allies, the southern Free Cities, withdrew support after the devastating battle. The show's adaptation of the event was as grand as it was in the books, though some events were tweaked. Certain surprising deaths shocked the audience. The death everyone had been dreading also happened in the final moments, and was as devastating as in the book. These four deaths in the battle will certainly impact the Targaryen saga, which will ultimately change the face of Westeros forever.

Ser Tyland Lannister

Ser Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) has been a prominent player in this saga since Viserys sat on the throne. He was a trusted ally of Ser Otto Hightower and schemed with him to put Aegon on the Iron Throne in place of Rhaenyra. One of Aegon's wise counsels, Tyland attempts to steer the war's proceedings, prioritizing fewer losses on both sides. Aemond sent him to Tyrosh to build an alliance with the High Council of the Triarchy and break Team Black's blockade. Tyland not only succeeded in his pursuit, but also impressed Admiral Sharako Lohar, a warrior woman who proposes having children with him. During the war, though, Sharako betrays him. It quickly becomes clear that Sharako only intends to defeat Corlys and has no intention of winning the crown for Aegon. When things become dicey, she throws Tyland and other Green soldiers in the water to steady her fleet. The audience last sees him drowning in the water along with his loyal soldiers. The death is a surprise, as in the books Tyland survives long after the civil war is over, eventually serving as a loyal hand of Aegon III. This could mean that the show may just end with an entirely different result.

Sharako Lohar

Sharako Lohar, portrayed by Abigail Thorn, was an intriguing character introduced in the sophomore installment. She was a key member of the High Council of the Triarchy. The Lysene admiral led a massive fleet into the 'Battle of the Gullet' along with Tyland and his soldiers. Soon, though, it becomes clear that both groups have different intentions. She wanted to finish Corlys and has no intention of preserving Aegon's throne. “The Sea Snake led the persecution and slaughter of my mates for more than 20 years,” Lohar shared with a shocked Tyland. “I sealed your contract for him.”  In the battle, she overwhelms the Sea Snake; however, his son Alyn comes to his rescue. A moment of disorientation allows Alyn to stab the admiral in the neck. The death left the fleet without a leader and caused their defeat in the 'Battle of the Gullet.' The show merges two characters from the books, Lohar and Racallio Ryndoon, in Sharako. Lohar survives the Battle of Gullet and eventually dies because of a local scuffle. Ryndoon also outlives the event and, for a while, reigns as King of the Narrow Sea

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) was possibly the most highly anticipated death of the battle. In the book, Rhaenyra's heir died fighting the Triarchy's fleet to protect his stepbrothers. Eventually, the crossbow from the fleet brought down his dragon Vermax. Both began drowning in the Gullet; after a while, Jacaerys managed to reach the surface. He used wreckage from one of the ships to support himself. However, a barrage of arrows from the Triarchy eventually pushed him to his death under the waters. Proceedings in the show went more or less the same, apart from a small but significant change. Initially, Jacaerys managed to dominate the Triarchy, with the strength of his dragon as well as his betrothed Baela. It was Rhaena's dragon Sheepstealer that pushed Jacaerys and Vermax into the waters. Triarchy then finished the job with their aim. This death will deal a huge emotional blow to Rhaenyra, possibly driving her to take ghastly revenge on her enemies.

Vermax

Vermax was the beloved dragon of Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, who also breathed his last in the 'Battle of Gullet.' This civil war holds a special place in Targaryen history because at its end all the dragons vanished from Westeros. 'Battle of Gullet' is one of the bloody events that contributed to the death of these beasts. Vermax died by drowning in both the books and the show.  Collett, who plays Jace, asked fans to mourn the dragon along with his character. "The noises that it makes actually sound like a dog dying, which is really horrible," he shared with Gold Derby. "I don't want anybody to just focus on Jace's death this episode. We've lost a really good dragon as well, so people should take that into account." During his retrospective with HBO, the actor called Vermax and Jace "brothers" and explained how, until the end, Rhaenyra's heir wanted to save the dragon.
