The Gilded Age Season 4: Meet All the Returning Stars of HBO's Drama as 3 Actors Are Upped to Series Regulars

Carrie Coon stars as Bertha Russell in HBO's historical show, and she is returning for Season 4. As the wife of George Russell, Bertha is an ambitious and calculating social climber in 1880s New York City. In a recent interview with USA Today, Coon opened up about her favorite part of the period drama. She shared, “We've never seen the Black Diaspora depicted in this time period, and I'm so satisfied by it and I just want more of it. I squeal with delight during Peggy's story, and I try to avoid reading it so I can be surprised. I'm really proud of that part of the show.”

Christine Baranski is also set to reprise her role in the new installment. She plays Agnes van Rhijn, a proud and sharp-tongued Dutch-American socialite. While chatting with Entertainment Weekly, Baranski teased what lies ahead in Season 4, hinting at “serious complications in the household.” She added, “Over the course of eight episodes, a great deal happens. And because there are so many well-established characters at this point, you have all these narrative lines and scenes moving from one to another with great panache.”

Cynthia Nixon is also returning as Ada Forte in Season 4. She plays Agnes van Rhijn's soft-spoken, warm-hearted younger sister and the widow of Luke Forte. In the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nixon talked about her character's growth, saying, “What we see in Ada is she’s getting better at saying no. She’s getting better at believing in her own opinions, personal and political.” She also teased the growing feud between the Russell and van Rhijn families, stating, “What was a cold war has become a hot war.”

Morgan Spector is among the returning cast members as well. He plays George Russell, a ruthless and ambitious 19th-century railroad tycoon who is also a devoted husband to Bertha Russell. In a 2025 interview with WWD, Spector revealed that he was initially unsure whether he could see himself in a period drama. “It’s funny, I had watched Downton, but I didn’t think that I would be able to do it,” he said, referring to creator Julian Fellowes' previous show. Spector further explained, “I didn’t think I would play in the world that Julian makes, for whatever reason. And so then when I auditioned for it and tried the material on, I was like, ‘Oh, this is actually fun.’ There’s a kind of Old Hollywood classical glamour to this that is very pleasurable to play.”
